Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

Front usb freeze computer

Ok so you were right and I did lose an IDE channel, so I bought an IDE to SATA conveter and just plugged the HD into one of the SATA slots. I have all the drivers installed and went through the device manager and updated everything. The problem is, I get the computer up and running and want to start putting files from my backup back on to this pc. I have a mouse and keyboard plugged into the back and nothing else. When I plug an external hd in to get my files off, the computer freezes, mouse and keyboard stop functioning and I have to restart the computer...any suggestions? thanks

I dont understand what you are explaining. Can you elaborate please? Thanks

  • skypirate Mar 27, 2008

ok I understand now, but what is the purpose of doing this? The freezing occurs when any of the ports are used regardless of using front or back panel. The only peices of hardware plugged in that work are the mouse and keyboard.

ok I tried everything you suggested, and its still instantly freezing on me...what to do...what to do?

  • skypirate Apr 01, 2008

ok, so im sure i tried all the drivers available, and am still getting the freezing problem with the front two usb ports. fortunately i have 6 usb ports in the back and have enough for everything, and have an extension running upfront for quick access. if you happen to think of any thing else just let me know. thanks for your help so far!

Which Operating system did you install?
    and which service pack?
Right click on my computer icon, left click on properties, this will bring up the system specs and on the page thats displayed it will show what OS and SP is installed.

Update sp2 to sp3 link
Download everest home from this link, run the program, click on motherboard then chipset, ID the northbridge and check for updates (google it) This should update all usb controllers and hubs to eliminate the "freeze".

Just another thought...The front usb controller is near the same chips that control the IDE bus, so if you have a usb A male to A female extension cable (I get mine from a Dollar Store or Big Lots) plug it into the back usb hub and connect it to your external drive.

OK it seems as though you have an IDE - USB dongle. What you need is a SATA - USB dongle. It appears that the drive you have is SATA, you will know this as there is only a small connector for tha Data and Power Plug. The IDE is a wide multi pinned socket with a large 4 pin Power Connector.
I have included a link to Ebay so you can see what you need. as in the USB to SATA dongle. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=usb+-+sata&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_dmpt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&_odkw=usb+-+memory+card&_osacat=0
You need to get one such as this to connect to your drive.

Secondary IDE channel

the motherboard you have can only support 4 SATA Drives. if you want to use your IDE drives, you have 3 options: 1) buy a SATA to IDE Converter which is around $20-$25. (if you selected this, you can fix the drives into the internal of the pc). 2) buy USB to IDE converter $10-$15. (if you want to fix the drive inside the pc, remove one PCI slot casing cover at the back of the computer casing and use the USB slot at the back of PC). Hope this helps. Good Day!

I want to install Windows XP on my IDE 2nd HD

- sata has no master
- i presume u want the OS on the ide drive, and not just that the ide drive to have "C" assigned to it! So : 1 - U can copy the data form the ide to the sata, and then reinstall the OS on the ide (note: the OS will start up a bit slower do to the slower ide drive !!!) and so it will become the C drive ! And u can assign to the sata what ever letter u wish...

2- if u don't want to reinstall the os u can do a copy of the os and put it on the ide drive(not just copy the files !! it will not work!!!). U cold use clonezilla for example... But probably the first method wold be safer ....

Cannot get 2 IDE devices to show in bios.

Does the computer have two IDE channels? If so set the Maxtor HDD as master on the primary channel and the DVD drive as master on the secondary channel. Also right click on My Computer, left click on Manage and left click on Disk Management and see if the drives show up there. Also check the boot order in BIOS.

Boot up issues will not boot up from HD

IDE and SATA do not mix unless setup properly.
I would use the SATA one as main hard drive and set the other up as an external one on USB
Try resetting the BIOS to boot from CD
on ter lower part of boot screen will tel you the key to press to access the BIOS setup
Usually one of these keys
F2 CTRL+ESC or DEL
when in BIOS check and set to boot from CD

IDE to SATA Adapter

Hi, could it be that you have an adapter that works one way only - IDE to SATA - it converts an IDE drive to SATA host port and therefore will not work in your motherboard. What you probably should get is Sata Drive to IDE connector. You might want to have a look @ http://www.satacables.com/html/sata-acessories.html./ Hope this be of some help to you. Good luck.
