It appears your timer/main controller/CCU has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question(*&^%$

Washer stops during normal wash cycle for a minute or more, and then continues. Would replacing the timer fix it?

If it actually goes on and finishes the cycle and that really bothers you replace it. If not leave it alone and allow a little more time to complete its cycle. The lid switch only keeps the spin cycle from going with the top open.

Spin cycle is hit and miss,

It could be the timer but don't rule out a loose lid switch. You have to remove the knob to get the timer off. To do so you have to pull the retaining rod out a bitdd8bcfd.jpg
To get inside the controls

I have a Sears Kenmore washer that sometimes does not spin in the spin cycle and sometimes it does. The timer progresses to stop, but clothes are still dripping wet. Resetting timer from spin usually...

The transmission in this machine is worn and is not shifting correctly. Understand that after the aggitate cycle, this machine should go into drain cycle without spinning and it should drain for about 1 minute. Then it should kick into spin cycle after it has emptied all the water. What is happening is it is (like skipping) the drain cycle and going directly into spin with water still in it,,, so the spin is slow as it is trying to empty and spin at the same time,,, thus the clothes do not spin out correctly,,, when you reset the spin, you actually spin all the water out the second time around.

Washer stops during rinse cycle and isn't easily restartable....

Sounds like the contacts in the timer has a problem. Unplug washer. Remove the back of the washer and spray WD40 in the timer. Put towels around and under to to collect excess runoff.
Rrotate washer dial 25 times and spray some more wd40. Rotate 25 times again. Do a wash load. If it works put everting back together.

Kenmore Elite top load washer timer will not rotate by itself through the wash/rinse/spin cycles

Gkar06,
Hello
Welcome to fixya.
I'm Huuum and happy to assist you,

You said, Each portion of the wash/rinse/spin cycle work correctly, but you have to manually move the timer to each cycle.

This tells us the timer is bad and needs service to replace it!
You will be fine, it is not a big job!

If you like you can try this first!

Like with an error code.
This can reset the system if it is electronic!
Unplug the washer and wait a 5 minutes then restart it.
If you can't reach the plug, use the breakerto cut the power for 5 minutes.

It's like rebooting your computer when its acting strange!
Usually it corrects some error problems if they are not serious.
Or they are sometimes just a glitch.
let me know how it works out.

How old is the appliance?

Let me know!
Please remember to enter a rating before you leave.
Thank You
