I have tried to swap to the 3 other ports without success.

Yes, of course I have the original disk !

When I connect the USB plug, the camera screen displays "Preparing..." and does not move further. If I press on "Continue" on the PC screen I have "Cannot confirm a connection with the camera"

    Back to suquare one...

I have swapped the 3 ports without success.

    The problem has been solved…

Connecting the camera and going to “add new equipment” which suggested to insert the provided disk, Windows finally found the USB driver and all is now OK!

    Thanks

You will need the drivers loaded on the PC for your camera - or it won't be recognized.

Do you have the original driver disc?
Thanks!

Sony Handycam DCR-HC42 Mini DV not recognized by Windows 7

win vista and win 7doesn't support usb streaming. the usb driver for this model would not be compatible with your computer's OS. although, you were able to download PMB still this wouldn't work, it's basically an alternative software that you can use with the newer OS. still the device driver would not be installed. and you would get a message that "ilink connection is not detected". the reason you get that is bec the camcorder and the software is intended for use with the dv (ilink or ieee1394) connection. so if your computer has an ieee1394 card and you have a compatible ilink cable, then your good to go,it should be a plug-and-play connection (no drivers required). all you need then would be a video capturing software (like win moviemaker) to transfer videos from tape to PC. hope this helps. thanks :)

When you turn on your connected Handycam, you are prompted to select a connection from the touch screen. Make sure you select the USB-HDD connection, and not the flash memory.

Hope this helps.
