If, when it does start and you see normal screens your version of Windows is probably corrupt or you have some type of virus. I would recommend wiping your hard drive and reinstall Windows.

This sounds like a loose wire on the backlight on the monitor.
If it were my computer, I would disassemble the screen and check the connections. You can find directions on Dell's site by going to support.dell.com and entering your service tag to get the downloads. You'll find the service manual there.

When i switched on my laptop it powers up okay then just goes blank with a blue screen

Hi there !

Blue screen means that your hard disk drive is damaged and cannot be repair or reformat. But still to repair or run windows operating installation on your CDROM and maybe it is repairable. Other you need to replace your hard disk drive to work again your computer.

Good Luck.

My dell inspiron 1501 laptop powers on but the screen stays blank and this has been going on since last month

Connect an external monitor to your laptop. If ok, then it means that LCD is faulty, on the other hand, if the issue persist, removed abd re-seat the memory module, if you have a good one do the same. If the same thing happens, it can either be the video or motherboard or it can also be the memory module.

Please let me know if the information has been helpful. Thank you and regards.
