I am not sure what type of blade engagement mechanism you have (ex. clutch, tensioner/idler pulley, etc...) but make sure that the blades can spin freely with the belt taken off of their pulleys. It could very well be that one of the pulley bearings is seized.

I would check the blade for balance and straightness. Also check if it has a piece out of it. The deck looks ok? No dents and is not damaged. Deck sits level? Front to back and side to side? Make sure all the bolts holding the spindle are tight. If the mower was set up by a dealer, make a good trip around the mower, look for anything that looks out of place.

I have a cub cadet rzt50 zero tudn. Blades are new and sharp but when i cut there is a trial of cut grass in the center of the mower tracks that is left behind. Mower is only a few years old with 100 hours...

if this started after the blades where replace make sure you have the right blades zero turn and reg mowers have different blades then check the bearings on the blade mandrels then last is to check for a rotted out deck with the belt tension pulling the blades apart

What would cause my craftsman zero turn to die when i engage the blades?

First, sort out between two possibilities: 1. The safety system is killing the engine -- for example, if the seat switch is faulty or misadjusted, the engine ignition is killed when you activate the blade engagement switch. 2. The blades, spindles, or belts are binding or stuck, which would "drag" the engine to a stop. I suggest you remove the belt that drives the mower from the engine. If the engine still dies when you engage the blade switch, it's problem #1. Check all connections, and check the seat switch with an ohmmeter. If the engine does not die, then you have mechanical drag. With engine off and the belts taken off, turn each spindle to find out if one is frozen or binding. Good luck!
