Question about Cameras

1 Answer

The website says that all you need is a usb chord to connect your camcorder to your computer. But I don't have a usb chord that can attach from my JVC GR-SXM161 to the computer. Is there one that is sold somewhere? I really need to get a video file into computer or digital form to hand out in disks to participants.

Is there a specific type I have to get. The instructions make it clear that this model was released before DVDs and connecting to computers.

There are many of these that sell fairly cheap. Check ebay and amazon.com or newegg.com
You can also use an sd card and transfer from camera to pc.

If you open the battery cover and you see a slot in there. Then it is for a regular SD card. Most are the same as long as they are SD. You can also get the cables that are made just for that camera. The description usually say the compatible cameras they work with. 2.0 is a common camera cord.

From my findings of JVC GR series, the usb cable is a 2.0 which is a common size and versatile. Very easy to find reasonably priced.

First, try attaching the camcorder via usb cable with the camera OFF, then turning it on. This may trigger Windows to activate the driver scanner and activate the driver. If you've been attaching with camcorder off, try attaching with it on, to see if that activates driver installation.

If that doesn't work, you may have a low-power usb plug; often the usb ports in the back of the computer put out more juice than the handy ones on the front. You may also need a shorter and more robust usb cable; I've found with various cameras and phones that certain usb cables work fine for recharging but won't necessarily provide adequate data transfer.

Garmins can only be updated by connecting it to a computer. To connect the Garmin 255w you will need a usb cable. If you don't have one that came with it you can check all your other electronic devices like camera, camcorder,mp3 player etc..( my mp3 player usb cable worked fine). Carefully and gently try each one. One you get a usb cable connect it directly to a usb port on your computer and not thru a usb hub. then go over to the Garmin site and register the unit and download Garmin updater to update your unit. I am attaching the Garmin link for you. Thanks for using FixYa

Hi - You have to install the USB driver for Windows BEFORE you attach the camera. If you attach the camera before you install the driver the driver will be broken and not work. If you did attach the camera before the driver installation you will have to remove the driver and then reinstall it then attach the camera via USB. It doesn't make a lot of sense but Sony is very emphatic about these directions.

Hopefully you have the drivers because they don't seem to be available from the Sony support website anymore.

Good luck and thanks for using Fix Ya.

There is a tutorial for transferring video from tyhis camera to a computer on the Sony website. Unfortunately, you do not say what kind of computer (PC or Mac) or operating system you have, and you have to specify this on the website to get the right instructions.

The instructions for a Windows computer are as follows:

Movie player applications must support mpeg 2 playback to open these files properly. Refer to the software manufacturer for additional information and available updates.
  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. Make sure the camcorder is turned off.
  3. Connect the camcorder to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
  4. Plug the AC power adapter into an electrical wall outlet and then connect it to the camcorder.
  5. Open the LCD screen on the camcorder.
  6. Turn on the camcorder.
  7. The USB SELECT screen will be displayed on the LCD; touch the HDD icon.
  8. Open the My Computer window on the computer.
  9. In the My Computer window, double-click the icon that represents the camcorder and then navigate through the folder structure to locate the video you want to transfer. Note: The camcorder will be listed in the My Computer window as an additional hard drive.
  10. Click to select the video or image files you want to transfer. Note: If your are using a High Definition Handycam® Camcorder, Sony recommends copying and pasting the AVCHD folder to the hard drive of the computer before accessing its contents.
  11. Type CTRL+C to copy the files.
  12. Click on the computer folder to which you want to copy the video or still image files.
  13. Type CTRL+V to paste the file into the computer folder.

The Sony page for your camera has many links for information and downloads, including software downloads, at THIS PAGE

Video transfer

If you're using a Windows Vista Operating System it'snot possible to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB connection. The videos from the tape camcorders cannot be transferred to Windows Vista Operating System as there is no USB Streaming ooption available on the Windows Vista Operating System. The Camcorder uses the USB Streaming function to transfer the videos to the Computer. You may wish to purchase a i.LINK/Firewire cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer in order to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer.
or
There is an update for driver on the Sony website to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB cable.
http://support.sony-europe.com/dime/downloads/downloads.aspx?site=odw_en_GB&m=DCR-HC42E&f=usbdrven_vista

You may also try installing the driver update for the Camcorder. The i.LINK cable gives a better video transfer qulaity than the USB transfer. The i.LINK cable used to connect the Camcorder to the computer depends on the number of pins available on the i.LINK/FIREWIRE port on the Computer. The i.LINK port on the Computer is a D shaped port which is labelled as i, DV, IEEE1394 and Firewire.

Connecting to computer & importing images from HD of DCR SR 42

Mine does the same thing. After it says "connecting" on the LCD of the camcorder, there is nothing to actually do on the camcorder. With the Sony SR42 software installed (supposed to come with the camcorder on purchase-but maybe you can also find it for free online), the software called Sony Picture Utility (which is part of the big packge of software) opens up automatically and offers to either burn your photos/videos to directly to a compact disc, or to import them onto the computer's harddrive.
That's how it happens for me.I'm not-tech savy or anything. Hope this helps.

If your camcorder is a digital version, you should have a 1394 iLink Firewire cable which is needed to connect your camcorder to your PC. A Firewire is a higher transfer rate connection than USB 1.0 (but slower than USB 2.0), and it is intended for applications such as video editing. Some camers, e.g., Sony, require a Firewire connection to exploit certain features of a digital camcorder and editing software, and it's best to use one. If you do need the Firewire but your computer doesn't have a 1394 Firewire port built in, you can purchase a PCI card version for around $50 and install it separately very easily.

And if your computer doesn't have the 1394 port, but does have a USB 2.0 connector (all newer computers now do), then you can connect your camcorder to your PC via the USB 2.0 (note: NOT a USB 1.0!) to begin capturing video. If you're still having trouble, make sure you go to your camcorder manufacturer's website to download any relevant drivers then retry your connection. If your computer Finds New Hardware sucessfully, you're in. Good luck!
