Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Thanks, FixallPhill. Your expert advice save me from buying a new dryer. It was the coils in our Kenmore Dryer that were no longer working. It took about 15 min. total to replace. From taking it apart, to puting the coils in and finally putting the dryer together again. You are awesome. Marisamar711

How do i fix a duet dryer that takes too long to dry

I pulled apart the back of my dryer to access the heating element. I noticed I have a break in one of the coils. So, that means I need to buy a new one. The thing I noticed is that only of of the terminals at the bottom of the heating element has a plug on it. There are no additional wires inside the dryer that could have come off so I am a little confused as to if i new coil will work.
I watched a video online and it clear shows both terminals being connected. Anyone have any advice?

Dryer heats up, but does not dry clothes. Vent is clean

As you can see, your heating element has 5 heating coils. If one or more of these coils have opened you dryer will still work and heat but not at well as it would if all coils worked together. You can check each coil with an ohm meter to verify if one or more is open.

Coil replacement

I'm not an expert but assuming you ordered the coils for your dryer your dryer must have them. I just finshed repairing my kenmore gas dryer after about 10 minutes the gas would shut off. This is becasue the coils that are on top of the gas line before the ignigter were defective. The coils control the gas valve and when my dryer got hot the coil being defective would close the valve. There are 2 coils a 2 prong and a 3 prong. Remove the front panel to gain access to the bottom of the dryer from there you will see your coils about as round as a quarter and 10 or so high. unscrew the screws holding down the retainer and undue the electrical clip. reverse for the install. good luck!

I have a Kenmore 80 series dryer(118.72812101).

You may have something inside the workings of the dryer which has shorted out the heater coil. this could be the source of the noise as well. you need to remove the cabinet to access this, yet be careful as the drum will fall out on you in process. You can get a new coil from an appliance part store in your area. Take the dryer apart before buying this tho, so you don't waste your money on the off chance that this isn't the trouble. you will need make model and serial number from unit so they can match up the proper coil for you. Make note of how the belt is placed and routed for proper replacement when reassembling. Also make note of 'drum rollers' condition, as this could be some of the noise also.
Best to you, hope it works out

Older Kenmore upright freezer

ajrtz I will give you the same advice I gave my parents when their freezer did this. Just buy a new one. The new freezer will have a full warranty, be more engery efficent(may even qualify for rebate from power company), and you won't be worring when it is going to go down again. To resolve a seal system problem is usually around 500 dollars and that is the price of a new unit. Sorry but that is the best advice I can give you on this. just being honest. Note: If you buy get the best warranty on the sealed system you can. This is the cooling system.
