Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

I have an RCA model #HD50LPW62AYX2 hdtv/dlp rear-projection set. The picture went out, and we thought it might be the bulb, so replaced it. The picture still will not come on, and there is a loud whining sound coming from the back of the TV, which even continues for a time after the set has been turned off. Could this be a color wheel?

When the set is turned on, there is just no picture, and no light coming from the back of the set. We can hear sound; the whining noise does not always occur, but can start while the set is turned on. When we turn the set off, we can still hear the whining sound, for maybe 30 seconds or so. It's VERY loud! Like I mentioned, we did replace the bulb, originally thinking this was the problem, but apparently not......

When this TV's functioning properly, it's a beautiful picture, and we've never had a problem, except for a lamp burnout at one time. It's about 2 1/2 years old.

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide.

Thank you so much - I'll show the above to my husband, as I'm certainly not going to touch it! We have a repair person coming out early next week, I hope, but I was kind of hoping it would be something we can take care of ourselves.

    You've been very helpful!

The color wheel can make a whinning sound for sure, However it should not continue to whine after shutting it off. That sounds more like the fan used to cool the lamp, as that will continue to run after the set is shut off. How soon does the whinning start when you push power? Let me know I should be able to help you out. DLPs are my specialty

look on the back of the set for the chassis number it should be an ATC number. if the lamp is not lighting I would assume you have some bad caps on the power supply if its the ATC336 I have a tip posted under my profile that fixes the power suppies on that chassis. Let me know the chassis and we can go from there.

the ATC 322 has just 7 components that feed the voltages from the bridge rectifier to supply the ballast which lights the lamp they are Diodes DP251 & 252, Resistors RP251 & 252 , Capacitors CP251 & 252 , and the line coil LP251 If you are planning on repairing this yourself, I would highly recomend getting the service manual and some support as DLPs are easy to diagnose with the proper info. I will post a link where you can get the proper service manual for that chassis emailed to you, and they provide free support with any manual purchase so you will have any help you need to actually figure out whats going on with your set. Heres the link if you want the manual just click on the RCA section and then select ATC322.

SOURCE: WHINING SOUND

More likely it is the color wheel this set uses---it is located inside the optical engine---part number for it:

267888This part is no longer available from RCA but is available on several sites on the internet (google the part number)

The wheel will when going bad sometimes make a fan like noise or even a high pitched whine.

Check out the sites on the net that sell this for price and decide if you want to attempt to replace it or if you have to have a shop do it for you.

Let me know if you have any questions or need advice.

I need to find a bulb for a D52W26

your model doesnt have a bulb like the DLP projection. Instead you have three CRTs ( picture tubes) one red, one green and one blue. If you respond to this same post with your symptoms I can assist with diagnosis.

You DO NOT have a DLP set, you have a conventional rear projection set with 3 picture tubes in it. If your led's are blinking then you have a problem loading down the power supply. I recommend you call a service company.

No Picture but sound

if you have a dlp with the 267888 color wheel, the wheels cant be replaced as RCA no longer makes them. If you use one of the other type color wheels you can get a replacement at the following link. They would need the model number of your set as The D52W19 isnt a dlp and doesnt have a color wheel. So just let them know what the model number of your set is.
