My sand filter has great flow for awhile, and then it stops, If I backwash and rinse the flow returns for a few hours. I vacuumed the pool yesterday and backwashed and then rinsed, A bunch of sand came out of the waste hose during the rinse. I returned the pump to filter and noticed that the pressure gauged showed 0 pressure. When I went topside I saw the filter was spitting all kinds of small particles back into the pool. HELP What is wrong? I have never seen sand come out of the waste hose.

When the filter get clogged the pressure in the filter increases and there is less water flow returning to the pool. If your filter is a sand filter, when you turn the valve to backwash and turn on the pump it reverses the water flow in the sand filter to flush the dirt out of the filter to waste. Look at the window openning in the waste pipe and keep the backwashing goinging until you see clear water. Then turn off the pump and move the control valve to Rinse, turn on the pump for a few minutes, this returns the water flow back to normal but the water goes to waste to make sure the sand filter is clean. Turn off the pump and move the control valve to filter and turn on the pump. This mode is the normal operating mode and the pressure gauge in the sand filter will show a drop in pressure. Some pressure gauge shows a red section to indicate when backwashing should be carried out.
FILTER is the valve position when the system is in the normal filtering mode. When you backwash the filter you first need to turn off the pump, place in BACKWASH position, and run the motor for 45 seconds (or until the backwash water is clear). Turn off pump and run in the FILTER position for 15 seconds. Repeat twice more. The RINSE position is to clear any dirt in initial start-up cleaning, plus resetting
filter bed after backwashing. The WASTE position is for
vacuuming directly to waste, lowering pool level, or draining the pool. The CLOSED position is for shutting off all flow through the valve. The RECIRCULATE position allows water to flow from the pump through the valve and directly to the pool.
You will probably only to use the FILTER, BACKWASH and maybe the RINSE valve position. The RINSE position is not as important as indicated by the fact that many backwash valves don't have a RINSE position.

If you are vacuuming a lot of debris or algae, you need to vacuum to waste. 1. You'll turn the equipment off, 2. You'll turn the valve to waste, 3. Turn the equipment back on, and 4. Vacuum the pool like you normally would. Only this time, the debris and dirty water goes out your backwash/waste line. You also don't have to backwash and rinse afterward because none of the debris went inside the filter.
Any time you vacuum up just a small amount of debris, you'll vacuum on filter and then backwash (30-60 seconds) and then rinse (about 30 seconds).
After your pool filters on the "backwash" setting, you should move it to the "rinse" setting. With the pump off, set valve to rinse. Start pump and operate for about 1/2 to 1 minute. This ensures that all dirty water from backwashing is rinsed out of the filter to waste, preventing possible return to the pool. Stop pump, set valve to "filter", and start pump for normal filtering. If it still won't start, check for restrictions in the intake and discharge lines.
You may have to change the sand from to much mud. this requires removing the valve from the top and syphoning the sand with a "sand changer" then removing the latterals from the bottom.( they unscrew from the hub inside the filter and cleaning them. Return the correct the amount of sand covering the tube shaft that connects the valve to the hub sot he sand doesnot clog the flow again. Return valve to the top and it should flow freely again.
1st Green water is algee. Kill the algee in the pool. 2nd when you're finished backwashing the filter. Stop pump and move valve handle to rinse position. Then restart pump. Run in rinse mode until glass is clear. Then stop pump again, and move lever to filter position. When you're backwashing, you're reversing the flow of the water through the filter. When you switch directly back to filter, anything left loose in the filter flows back to the pool. When you select rinse, it reverses the flow back to normal, but keeps the water going to the waste outlet until clear, that way that green puff of water will go out the drain. Are you using the rinse setting for a few seconds following the backwash? If not, once you finish washing, stop the pump, change the valce to rinse, then run it about 3 to 5 seconds. Shut down then switch to filter and the particles should stop coming back to the pool.
