I need to recover my Outlook Express Emails with all the attachments. I Reinstalled the Windows XP Home and formated the HD, and forgot to make a backup of the Outlook Express emails. Can anyone recommend a good program that recovers the outlook emails from a formated hard drive including the attachments and what type of files extension should I be looking for when trying to set up the recovery program?

Hi Alex,
First, I'm sorry to tell you that the chances you'll succeed recovering the data are quite small - as you reinstalled Windows over the same partition, and recovery of OVERWRITTEN files isn't guaranteed.

With tat said, here are few programs you might want to try:
GetDataBack For NTFS or GetDataBack For FAT
Undelete Plus
RecoverMyFiles

Or these FREEWARE:
Recuva
FreeUndelete

By the way, you should look for DBX files.
If you manage to get a recovery tree, the files should be located at: C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{random numbers nd letters}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

GOOD LUCK (You'll need it!),
Pelu.

95 e mails deleted in erroe is there any chance of recover

Depends if the emails were deleted from a web based email like hotmail or yahoo. If they were, the emails usually get moved to the trash folder after being deleted from the inbox. If they are deleted from the trash folder, than it is not possible to recover them. But if you have replied to any of the emails then you might have the message thread in your sent box for that particular email.
I use Outlook 2007 on vista OS so it may be a bit different to XP Mail or Outlook. The data for outlook (calendar, contacts, emails) is stored in a .pst file by default stored on your C Drive. So your deleted emails may or may not still be in this file. You can import the file to your outlook program to retrieve any old / archived emails that are stored in this file.

To find where your .pst file is stored on your computer, google a term like 'where is outlook .pst file on a windows xp os' or 'how do i find a .pst file on a windows xp computer'

The .pst files can be imported in outlook by going to 'File > Import and Export > Import from another file or program > Select the Personal Folder File .pst file.
This is how you get your emails back after they have been archived, or after your computer has been formatted, so if theres any chance of getting them back after being deleted when using outlook this method would be it. Hope it helps

File with extension *.dbx

DBX files (files with *.dbx extension) are the files where Outlook Express stores email messages. They can be found in so-called Outlook Express Store Folder named"Inbox.dbx," "Sent Items.dbx," etc. To determine Store Folder locationclick Store Folder button at Tools>Options>Maintenance in OutlookExpress. DBX files may be copied to another folder in order to backup e-mail messages.

How to open and edit DBX files
To open Outlook Express dbx files you just should select a file anddouble-click on it. The software will be open a .dbx file, scan dbxfile and visualize e-mails.
How to extract emails from DBX files
It is almost impossible to extract DBX files manually. However, there are tons of DBX extracting software over the Internet, such as DBX to EML.

Outlook express file recovery tool

Have a look at this follow the instructions it should make it all better.

MailNavigator can cope with the task of restoring out-of-order dbx files when Outlook Express itself cannot read them and when a range of other programs are not capable of restoring the information contained in these files. These situations can happen because of viruses, computer breakdown, power interruptions and many other reasons, leading to errors in the file system.
If your computer crashed, first of all you should make sure you have backup copies of your dbx files as well as of all other important data. It's good if you make backup copies of your data on a regular basis. But, unfortunately, in our experience situations are often encountered where there is already nothing to restore.
The process of data recovery from dbx files includes two stages:

oeboxes1.gifoeboxes2.gif
If your Outlook Express program is properly installed and tuned, MailNavigator will automatically find the dbx files from the information in the systems register. In this case you can load the dbx files from the Information Retrieval page by double clicking on each of them. Or search for messages in these files using the search system.
If MailNavigator cannot automatically determine the location of the dbx files (for example if these files are on a CD), first you have to find them using search tools, and then load them into MailNavigator using the menu command:
File | Load External Mailbox...
eudora1.gif Once you've read the messages, select the ones that should be exported back into Outlook Express. You can use various filters to select the messages. If you want to export all the messages browsable in the Navigator at once, use the menu command:

Message | Select All
Having selected the messages, export them using the menu command:

Message | Save as...
eudora2.gif In the opened dialogue box, indicate the file and export path, and choose the file type: Eudora mailbox.
When the command is executed, there will be files in the export directory with extensions .toc and .mbx, and also a file descmap.pce. If there are attached files in the exported messages they will be saved in the subdirectory Attach.

Once the mailbox in Eudora format is created, open the program Outlook Express and use the menu command:
File | Import | Messages...
oeimp1.gif
In the opened dialogue box, as the program from which the message is imported, select: Eudora Pro or Light:
oeimp2.gif
In the next dialogue box indicate the directory in which you put the messages from MailNavigator at the export stage:
oeimp3.gif
Further, if Outlook Express finds mailboxes in this directory, it will suggest you select one of them for import:
oeimp4.gif
All that remains to do is to press the Finish button, and a folder containing the imported messages is created in Outlook Express. hope this helps
