Is it possible to upgrade windows XP to windows 7

If you are asking could you upgrade directly from Windowx XP to Windows 7 as a direct upgrade, the answer is yes but it's not recommended.

The much better method is to use Windows Easy Transfer to move your important files from your computer onto an external hard drive. After all your files are backed up safely, it's best to start the Windows 7 install and when you get to the "Upgrade" or "Custom (advanced)" screen to choose Custom. This will open up the drive view. Click on "Drive options (advanced)" which will bring up the ability to delete the partitions.

If you find that you have more than one shaded area in the Drive 0 bar, you have more than one partition. Unless you have experience creating and modifying partitions, only delete the partitions on Disc 0 which are marked Drive (C:). Otherwise, you can decide what partitions you need to delete to make enough room for Windows 7.

I'm not sure if you've already done your homework or not but before you upgrade to Windows 7, run the update advisor to ensure your system and software is Windows 7 ready and make sure to collect the hardware drivers that work with the exact version of Windows 7 you are installing... 32 bit and 64 bit are totally different monsters!!!

Having all of your software install disks on hand, and all your backups (and a bootable copy of the backup software!!) and Windows 7 hardware drivers on an external hard drive is the best way to approach an upgrade.

Best of luck!! Hope this helps.

Need to load xp on gateway

Do you have a full installation disc or an Upgrade version of XP? The full install should give you an option for partitioning and formatting the new hard drive as part of the installation process. From Microsoft, read this page for details:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348 . You may need some additional drivers if you have a SATA hard drive. More screen shots and details are here: http://www.theeldergeek.com/hard_drives_03.htm .

An alternative way of dealing with the problem may be to use a third-party Partition Manager software (Symantec's Partition Magic, Paragon's Partition Manager). Paragon's site is
http://www.partition-manager.com/ . This site has various levels of Partition Management software (with different features available in the more expensive versions). You'll need the bootable CD version of the software (recovery disc, .iso) to do the partitioning.

I hope this helps.

(I thought the upgrade version could also be done to a new hard disc including the partitioning; all you needed was a Win OS disc from an earlier version to prove qualifying ownership.)

Boot off the XP pro cd. When it asks for which partition you want to install onto, select your main partition and press 'D' to delete the current partition, then follow the prompts to create a new partition in its place. It will no longer complain about previous versions being installed.

WARNING: this will wipe all the data off your PC.

HI...

Do you see the FDD been read after the F6 key?

Do not go with the quick formatting option.
Try without partitioning the driver and proceed with the installation.

Let me know
Thanks

Drive L: ?

So you've got rid of the ext partition but windows keeps displaying the mapped drive with and an error? Now you want to remove the wrong mapped drive.

Depending upon the software driver you installed - FS Driver, Explore2FS, you will probably need to uninstall that driver (it should be under Add/Remove in Control Panel). In some versions of FS Driver, I think it actually has it's own preferences under control panel which you can disable the mounting in.

Partitioning a USB flash drive

Yes, it is possible to partition a flash drive, and it is safe. To do this, you can use windows disk manager or other softwares such as partition manager from Paragon.
Just make sure that you format it in FAT32 so it is readable.

I want to format my maxtor 160g from ntsf to fat32 to view between xp and mac

depending on whether you want to keep the data currently on the drive, you can use a program such as Partition Magic or similar to alter Partition characteristics (I would strongly reccomend you back up all data before doing anything though) the other option is to format the drive before installing an OS such as XP. I believe the installer for XP home allows you to format to FAT32 if you wish (not sure about that) if not you should be able to do it with Partitioning oftware from within windows or with a boot disk which contains a version of fdisk with large drive support.

You need to state exactly what model and hardware configuration you have, along with version, date, OS.

Software is already installed in the drive. Its an USB connection inside, so the PC should recognize it when its plugged in. Return it before you run out of the typically 2 week return time frame.
