This device is very old. it may still work and you may find parts on a website like e-bay but the streetpilot series is no longer able to get map updates. If you purchased lifetime updates back in the day you might give Garmin a call to see if they can offer any trade in value. I've heard good things about the support people there.
If you have downloaded the WebUpdater from www.garmin.com, plug the unit into the computer with the USB cable, then run the program. It should locate the unit and any updates available. Let me know if this helps.
Same issue on Mac OSX 10.4.1 with my SP 2720. Just purchased and is in excellent condition, never registered. Double checked all connections, downloaded and re-downloaded updater. Updater continues to say cannot find device. Tried other USB cables, ports, turned on/off, etc... Nothing. Would LOVE to know what resolutions others have found. Please let us know!
You connect the 2720 to your pc with the supplied usb cable. Power up the 2720 with the ac supply cable. Then run the garmin webupdater. It will do the update.
You must have previously installed the webupdater and the usb drivers. If you use the garmin mapsource software and can connect to the 2720, to transfer waypoints, tracks, etc., then the usb drivers are already installed.
You can download the webupdater at this site: http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
When you plug in the USB cable, if your System, Hardware, Device Manager lists "GARMIN Devices", then the problem has to be in your network connection or Garmin WebUpdater. If your Device Manager doesn't list "GARMIN Devices" then the problem is in the computer, USB cable, or 2720.
I have three 2720s right now with bad USB ports. I'm going to try replacing the USB driver chip in each unit, but now I'm just guessing. Hope this helps. Tom
When updating the maps, you need to be registered with Garmin. All the numbers came with the unit. If you turn over your Garmin 2720, there will be a number flanked by "*". That is your unit ID. When you register, you must provide that ID. From the site, you can update your maps and you shouldn't need the 25digit key. It's programmed into your unit.
Mine just started doing the same thing. I took apart the speaker power cord, but don't see anything wrong with it. I thought I saw the unit turn off/on one time when I moved the cigarette plug back and forth, but as I said the wires are fine. I have the power cord apart right now and have 12 volts hooked up to the wires directly and the unit has been sitting here for 30 minutes without resetting.
I fixed my C530 on my own. Garmin support will not give you this solution. I attached the GPS to the computer with the usb cable. I used the file explorer in windows to view the file system on the GPS. I sorted the files by date. Then I moved the files that had a newer date than the last time the GPS worked, to an backup folder on my computer in case I need to restore the files to the GPS again. I than disconnected the GPS from the computer and restarted the GPS. The GPS works perfect now and doesn't enter the demo mode any longer.
I tried another power cord and that was not the problem. I did do a firmwre update and that corrected the unit. It has been working well for the past 3 weeks. You should go to the Garmin website and download the latest FIRMWARE update.
