Question about Altec Lansing SoundBar FX3020 Computer Speakers

Altec lansing fx 3020 soundbar - fried power supply

I inadvertently plugged a 12V dc supply into my soundbar, instead of the supplied 5V. i sensed something was wrong immediately after i turned the unit on because there was a soft crackling noise then smoke came out of the unit. i unplugged it immediately but the damage was done. after pluggin it in to the correct power supply, it wouldn't turn on anymore. i have some skill in electronic repair, but i'd prefer knowing what i'd need to replace than have to figure it out myself... please help. thanks.

SOURCE: how to repair atp3 altec lansing

Best bet would be to just strip the wire with a wire stripper or utility knife and twist the bare ends together to fix the connection. A little electrical tape around those wires and you should be almost good as new. Of course you might notice some difference in quality but I'm pretty sure the only way round that would be replacing the cable.

Try it out and let me know how it works out for you. If you know how to solder it might be a good idea to solder the connection as well.

SOURCE: output board for Altec Lansing ADA995

I had the same problem. One day I heard two pops and the speaker, including the power light, were dead. Neither Dell nor Altec Lansing support them. They're throw-aways, unless you know a genius electronics technician.

SOURCE: Altec Lansing ada745 fuse

It is written on the sub. You can also take it out or look at the spare which is taped to the power cord wall plug. I believe it's T1A 250V fuse

SOURCE: Finding replacement Power Supply for Altec Lansing

I did the same! Thanks for suggesting a call to Customer Support (800)258+3288. The guy didn't seem overly pleased to help, but he did promise to send me a new power supply. Also, he said that they don't make the iM7 anymore, but I had already found out that the iM9 uses the same power supply. I, too, will wait and see.

How can I splice Altec Lansing amplified speaker system 221 to ac power supply cord instead of the computer cord

Not a good idea. The receptacle that the computer cord plugs into has EMI filters in it. Bypassing it would cause an AC hum that you'd never be able to get rid of.

Power coverter to scanner failure.which unit should i buy? present one 240v 50/60hz.0.4A. output 12v.dc.i.25A

I just found my Canon 5000F scanner to have a power supply outputting 3V DC instead of 12V DC. I replaced it with a 12V DC Power Supply from Tandy rated at 1.5 amps. I had the scans getting darker by the day and sometimes completely black. Now I have great scans again. Just test the voltage at the plug that supplies the scanner for a healthy 12V DC with a multimeter.

Wrong Power Supply

If it doesn't work with batteries or the supplied power supply than your speakers are fried. Sorry for the bad news.

Subwoofer making load humming noise

The reason for the hum in the Altec Lansing VS4121 speaker system is the stray field of the power supply transformer. This stray field is strong enough to affect the amplifier. All other reasons given by numerous reports on the web do not apply. If you are handy and have got the time you may mitigate the problem by physically moving the amp away from the power supply or turning it 90 degrees. I managed to lift up the amp in my subwoofer by about 50 mm, which was difficult to achieve and did not cure the problem perfectly. I don't see any other way to solve this problem except you feed DC in from the outside and do not use the internal power supply. That would be really odd indeed
