What's sparking... is it by the Magnatron window... or the carousel?...
If there is a carousel... take it out...
if its by the magnatron window,,, then...houston... we have a problem...
might be contamination... and that may require opening up the unit... sorry...
hopefully it's only something floating around in there that's causing the arc...

Sharp R-1510 1000 watts microwave, not heating

Sounds like the inverter (power supply for cooking) or the magnatron which does the work----neither are cheap parts.

Tip

Microwave Oven will not heat.

When your microwave oven has power, the fan runs, carousel turns, light comes on but the unit does not heat up you have a bad high voltage diode, bad filter capacitor or a bad magnatron in that order. The diode and capacitor do not cost very much. You can get them at www.mcmelectroncs.com or www.repairclinic.com . Replacement would mean removing the unit from under the counter (if not a tabletop unit) and removing the case. Locate the diode and capacitor. They should be near the power section behind the transformer and display. The diode is attached to the chassis on one side with a screw and on the other end with a spade lug to one side of the filter capacitor. The diode is brown and has an arrow on the side. The filter capacitor is a large oval silver can with two spade lug connections on one end. After replacing both parts if the unit will not heat you would need a new magnatron. The part is fairly expensive, but depending on the cost of your unit, it may pay to replace it. You should be able to get the magnatron at www.repairclinic.com . The magnatron replacement is not difficult. About four screws and several wires on spade lugs. Just be concientious or mark everything for correct reassembly. Also make sure the part is correctly installed and all seals are in place. You do not want microwave energy to leak out.

Microwave makes a loud roaring sound when start is pressed to cook something. The turntable turns and lights go on, but sound is horendous. We quickly stop it fearing it might be melting down.

Most likely it is the magnatron has gone bad, this or the fan for the magnatron. If your handy you can dissasemble the unit and look for a damaged fan, if none found then the magnatron is most likely bad.

Our microwave stops after a few seconds and code comes up F9

It of course depends on the model number, but here's some discussion from other boards:

F-9 on this microwave IS inverter related. There is a service tech troubleshooting document stuffed in behind the control board cover which has some testing proceedures. My problem was the magnatron and checked out bad with the help of this document. It would run for a few seconds making clicks and then say F-9. It has been working great since I replaced the magnatron PN 6324w1a002c.

f9 model 721.63764300
Kenmore Elite 36 " over tne counter microwave is supplied by LG made by Gold Star, made in China. It's main problem is the high voltage inverter board supplyed by Sears Parts. If you get a F-9 code on your microwave display screen and the micro quits it's probably this board. Reset the machine by pulling the power plug and waiting an hour. If it is the high voltage board is at fault it will probably fail after 45 seconds of start up. This part is really hard to get at but is less than $100. A qualified technician should be able to remove and repair this item in less than hour. Some techs will quote you $300 labor, don't buy it, it should cost a $100 or less. No need to buy another microwave.

To find helpful exploded view diagrams and get part numbers, you can just enter your full model number at the Sears parts site.

But Sears parts can usually be obtained for far less here by entering either the part number.

A full Sears/Kenmore model number has 3 digits, a dot, then 8 more digits, such as ###.########.

Hit the start button and runs for 6 sec then code F-9 can't find manual

You didn't mention your brand or model, but F9 code on an LG sometimes means either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount.

See this file on door switches.

If a switch is all you need, we offer a universal type for only $5 postpaid which you can order here.

Here is more info on F9 as it relates to some brands and models:

GE SpacemakerXL Microwave oven quits after a few seconds

This disgusting type of repair procedure is called "shotgunning".

I have always preferred testing and experience to determine what is wrong, as opposed to guessing!

I assume that they did not charge you for the good parts they mistakenly replaced?

IF they are a GE-authorized service center, they should have recalled a bulletin from a while back about defective or mismounted magnetrons causing electrical interference that disrupts the controller.

What your oven needs is a new magnetron and (IMHO) their hands off of it. If the thermostat were bad, the oven would be totally dead.

You can find GE-authorized servicers by contacting GE Customer Service here.

Good luck.

it sound to me as if the high voltage diode is shorted. It could be inside the capacitor or out board the cap. The capactor could also be short but this is a rarity. Diodes are a cheep item . repace it and if it don't work its probably the magnatro. good luck.

more than likely the fuse has blown onthe magnatron it is the button looking thing on the magnatron with two wires. there are 2 of these one is on the magnatron the other is above the heat box test these for open. if open replace. if good then replace the magnatron.
