I had very similar problem. There is a small sensor flap near the hinge in the battery compartment which tells the camera if the battery door is closed or not. If it wont work properly it gives signal "battery door open" and camera will shut down, mine did it randomly after few seconds. To see if that sensor is the cause for the problem, push it in with a toothpick. If camera can be started up and it stays on while battery door is open then that's it. Try to clean it up by gently shaking the camera and sucking air from it, even small bit of dirt can cause the malfunction. As last solution you could superglue the sensor to "door closed" position. (There might be similar problem with front cover sensor also, but I have no experience with it.)

I also have a Z1 which shuts off frequently. It also sometimes fails to switch on at all. If the top of the front slide panel is depressed when opening, camera more likely to power up, but tricky to use whilst holding top tightly.
At least by this means the camera can be made to operate!

Try a different battery - how old is the camera - the voltage may be too low, hence it turns off.

Battery doesn't fully charge. Over three years. Do I need a new battery and if so how much are they?

I have the same problem, maybe. My Z1 worked fine for maybe 4 years, it was a rebuilt one with original battery. After much use, videos etc, I replaced the battery and even bought a charger. This has not really helped. When I slide it open I get zoom error. When I press the button to review and set format it goes off while I am in the process of setting the date. What to do? SCREEN SHOWS PROTECTED CARD WHEN TURN ON CAMERA

SD cards have a small slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

Low battery

As you have noticed, the battey is not charging completely which indicates a faulty battery. Too bad you didn't get it replaced when under warranty as they would have replaced it for you for free. ANyways you can get a replacement from here for about $14

Fuji finepix Z1 has DSC on screen ?

Hi and welcome to FixYa.

The reason it doesn't charge properly is probably due to age of the battery. Over time, they charge less and less. You need to replace the battery.

DSC Mode means you can access your card.

There is not enough room to explain every step to moving your pictures to the pc. Please refer to your manual to learn how to do this. If you have any other questions you can leave me a comment.

Have fun with your camera,

Rob

I have the Fuji FinePix Z1, the battery is not staying charged for a long period of time, always having to charge it, is it time for a new battery??

Generally Lithium-Ion camera batteries will last around 1-2 years. The batteries have a "memory", meaning that after a certain number of charges they begin to hold less of a charge. If your camera is still under the manufacturers warranty you can contact your manufacturer for assistance, otherwise most places you can buy digital cameras carry replacement batteries, but it is definitely time for a new one.

Fuji Finepix Z1 Zoom Error

I saw another post in this forum were someone suggest banging it on a table a couple times, not to hard that you'd dent it but a good enough bang. Worked like a charm! I tried the trigger and slide method but while the error message went away the zoom wouldn't focus. Try banging it, it sounds bad but it worked wonders!
