OK great. Try this for me:
Right click on My Computer, click on Properties, click the Hardware tab then click on Device Manager.

Go to the CD Rom drives section, and uninstall the driver (right click and select 'Uninstall'). It may ask you to reboot, if it does, do so.

If it doesn't ask you to reboot, on the 'Action' menu (still in Device Manager here) click on 'scan for hardware changes' and it will reinstal lthe drivers (see below).

If it asks you to reboot, after it has done that, it will reinstall the drivers for the CD drive. If it asks you for a CD at any point just ignore it and click Next. After it has completed the procedure, test the drive and see if it now plays ordinary CDs. If this works, great! If not, get back to me, as it may suggest a hardware fault.

Sounds like it could possibly be a driver issue - what operating system are you using?

It isnt driver problem its required codecs not installed.most media players come with own package of codecs and are not always enough.windows media player is constantly updating codecs.
download a media player called vlc(just type vlc in search engine)it has all the codecs you have ever heard of and can play all media types;cd ,cdr,dvd;vcd,hd,divx,wmf,flv,dv,mpeg4 + internet streaming video.and its free.

First you need to check your hardware confiration in that you need to install the divce dirvers then

You need to edit your registry.
Click the Start button, click run, type in the run window regedit than click OK
Close any opend Keys.
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE than open SYSTEM, next open CURRENTCONTROLSET than open CONTROL than open CLASS & find
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} listed in the right half of the window. Right click on LOWERFILTERS & left click delete, then right click on UPPERFILTERS & left click delete.
Exit the registry, and reboot the laptop.

Try this fix. It's a 50/50 shot that it will work.
(remember windows provides the driver for all CD & DVD drives)

You need to edit your registry.
Click the Start button, click run, type in the run window regedit than click OK
Close any opend Keys.
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE than open SYSTEM, next open CURRENTCONTROLSET than open CONTROL than open CLASS & find
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} listed in the right half of the window. Right click on LOWERFILTERS & left click delete, then right click on UPPERFILTERS & left click delete.
Exit the registry, and reboot the laptop.

Good Luck!

You must be running windows Vista. This is the only operating system tha continues to loos USB devices, cdrom, DVDROMs & camras. In the old days cdrom's needed a driver Windows 95 & 98. Not true for XP home & pro. Your proble lays with Vista. Try updating Vista through windows update. (It may help if the MS team found a fix).

Try cleaning the disc. Getting that error means something is wrong with the lense of the drive. If disk cleaner wont do it, need to send it for repair.

Problem with matshita dvd-ram uj-850S

Your DVD drive was probably misaligned, probably due to some force applied to it such as when you mistakenly added two DVDs at the same time. Or it may be a factory defect. It is difficult to calibrate a DVD drive or any drive for that matter because of high precision needed.

You may try however to just clean the lens which may have been blocked with dirt. Just eject the drive, you will see the lens somewhere in the middle of the platform. Use a drop of 10% alcohol on the tip of a cotton bud and clean the lens without applying too much pressure.
