I bought a used 2001 john deere riding mower and it rolls over but wont start. I replaced the plug. It fires up when I pour gas in the carb and shuts right off. Do I need a new carburetor?

pour a little bit of gas in the carburetor and try it. if it starts for a few seconds it may be clogged and need to be cleaned. change the spark plug first. and try if it wont start then try the carburetor.
