The problem might not be with the dryer, but with the washer. Let me explain. When I first got my LG w/d set, I did a web search, and found that front load washers tend to build up bacteria and mold(which one person said was staining her clothes). The solution was to leave the door of the washer open when not in use. That worked for me for the most part, but the musty smell persisted. I found that the soap tray was getting dirty(from mold/bacteria), and the area inside was even worse. So now I remove the soap tray when not using the washer. Also, some appliance stores have cleaning packs that dissolve in an empty washer load. They are supposed to clean out residue and kill bacteria that cause odor in "HE" washers that may only be noticeable from the dryer. The brand name of the product I have is "Washer Fresh", and they're about $12 for 6 "PowerPacs".

Hi,

This is a common problem with high efficiency front loading machines. I put together some tips that might help. Take a look at the link below and let me know if they help.

Hi, If you don't clean out the lint trap frequently, your dryer may have small lint fires inside the cabinet. The smell from these fires can leave a strong odor in the clothes drum. Also, if there are any solvents, paints, lacquers, etc. in use in the house, your dryer may alter and/or amplify the fumes to an odor unlike the natural fumes given by the solvent, paint, etc.
Here's what to do: First, clean all of the lint from the inside cabinet and ductwork of your dryer. Have a qualified appliance repair technician inspect the dryer for damage caused by any lint fire. Move all containers of flammable liquids at least 50 feet away from the dryer. Gas dryers have a large flame when operating properly and can ignite the fumes of any flammable liquid or gas. Then, try to clear the odor, by running a couple of loads of old rags or towels.

LG leaking from bottom, Not the filter clean-out.

Not necessary to blame LG, ALL of these front loaders are garbage. They were designed poorly and released too soon just to have a new gimmick.

Smell after drying

Try drying your clothes without the dryer sheet and see if the smell is still there. If it is not, then the problem is the dryer sheet.
If it is, then you need to describe the smell better. Different people handle smells differently. What smells musty to you may smell fragrant to others.
You need to determine if the smell you don't like is really a musty smell, or is it a fragrance you don't like. Have some friends (not family members) smell the clothes and verify if what you are smelling is musty or fragrant.

It could also be that even though the clothes smell OK out of the washer, that the detergent you are using is the cause.

Musty/Mildew smelling clothes...

lg has a known problem with smelly mildew cloths. If you call LG they will tell you its not there problem. Cheapest solution is to wash door gasket with some clorox and then betwen washes leave door open. On the washing supply shelves there is a product you put in the washing machine run a wash without cloths and it does the same thing except it costs $7.If you bought it a t Lowes go back and ***** to store manager my friend did exactly that and got the machinje replaced

Same problem with our LG Tromm

I had the same problem with my LG Tromm and was ready to throw away every one of my towels they were so rank smelling. As a last resort I filled the detergent area with one cup of white vinegar and ran a load through on hot. Then I washed them with just a tablespoon at most of detergent. They came out smelling fine, the mildew smell was completely gone. How long it will last, I don't know.

I also read somewhere recently that we all use way too much detergent in our washers and dishwashers. And surprise, surprise, the post went on to say that too much detergent in your towels/clothes can leave a musty, mildewy smell in them.

Now when I do laundry, no matter what it is, I use about 1/4 of the amount of detergent called for, even though the HE uses so much less. In all, maybe 1-2 Tbsp, and everything comes out just as clean.

Also, try using a product from Clorox just for front loading washing machines. It's Clorox Washing Machine cleaner...it seemed to help with the overall smell. And I agree, I will never buy this particular machine again.

LG TROMM DRYER DLE5977 Burning Smell

It is a POS dryer, we have the same one. My suggestion get another dryer. We vacuumed it all out (don't you have a problem with the lint catcher?) Then it started loud pounding noise, which a lot of people seem to have the same problem, then our sensor went out and we had to dry the clothes 5-10 x's...now crack in stainless steel drum and is chewing up all our expensive clothes!

The following are the methods you can avoid odor in clothes after washing.
  • Check that the drain line is clear
  • Check the drain hose for kinks or blockages
  • Check pump for blockages
  • Check for build up of soap in the outer tub
Good luck. Please do post comments if the problem is still not solved or if there are any doubts in this post.
