My 42" LG plasma tv suddenly went very dark and seemingly completely black around the edges. Any suggestions? I have tried unplugging it and switching inputs, but to no avail.

Please download these two manual, these are what are used to train the engineers to repair these units, inside are troubleshooting and repair procedures, follows these and you should get an insight as to what is going on. Now if you feel that it you do not want to do it. It is my professional advice that you, get you set looked at by a LG, Authorised Service Centre, contact an LG head or local office, and ask for a referral to an Authorised service center.and then contact them, and ask for free "Quote", this way, you will be able to make an informed judgment, as to repair or replace. As these days seemingly insignificant SYMPTOMS, often cost as much to repair as it may cost to buy.

42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture

Most likely what happened is one of the capacitors went bad. When a capacitors goes bad it produces a popping sound. This could be an easy and cheap fix if you find the bad capacitor or capacitors. The bad capacitor will have a bulging top most likely on the power board but could be anywhere.

LG Plasma Problem

This could be the main drive board failed, or the plasma display backplane has a defect. These types of repairs are generaly fairly expensive.

I would be considering to get an estimate just in case it is simple fault. But, if the repair will cost more than a few hundred dollars, I would strongly suggest a new set. Also, servicing an older set is a gamble in case something else will soon fail.

DELL 42 inch Plasma TV

I have a 42" LG LCD TV and just experienced this today. Watching cable, then the screen went to black, but audio continued. I pressed the guide button on my remote and pic came on with my guide menu. But then went to black again 10sec later and has remained that way for nearly an hour. Tried switching off both cable box and TV, disconnecting and reconnecting cables, but no luck. Finally unplugged mains, waited a minute, then turned back on. Everything seems normal now after the reboot. Phew.

42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture

Our LG 50" plasma tv screen went black after a popping noise but still had sound, after great diliberations decided to take the back off and have a peek!
We unplugged the tv and tested the fuses (there were three we could see) one had blown, the one on the left as you look at the back of the tv it also has one above it. We wrote the code/seriel number down and took the fuse to the electrical wholesalers Maplin and bought a pack of 10 fuses for £1.29 replaced the fuse in the tv and everything now fine!!!!!!
Hope this might be of use to anyone whose lost the picture after a loud popping/snacking noise but still has sound.
