Question about KitchenAid KSSC42QM Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

The condenser fan is not running. I shut the fridge off because the divider between the fridge and freezer was so hot. When I turned the unit back on, the fan did run for a while. Does the fan need replacing or is it a switch or sensor that tells the fan when to start?

On your model it could be the fan part number 2206036 or the control board relay or both. I see your listing is a week old and unanswered and I would have be able to help you sooner if Fixya's server was working properly. Sorry if this has inconvenienced you, Sea Breeze

Could be but before that check if settings are working. Set the freezer settings to coolest and see if cools. If ok, set to desired temp.

The divider between the freezer and refrigerator is hot to the touch.

It's usually caused by the condenser fan which is underneath around back. If it's not running when the compressor runs it will cause the problem you describe. You will need to remove the cardboard backing on the back of the fridge to access the fan.
Here's how to test the fan.

I have an Estate side by side fridge, and the front of the wall dividing the fridge from the freezer is very hot...almost too hot to touch. Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.
This is s sure sign that either the condenser fan is not running OR that the condenser in the bottom rear of your refrigerator is plugged up with lint and or pet hair. Remove the fiberboard cover from the lower back of your refrigerator and clean the condenser and the condensor fan area.
Just unplug the unit while doing this and be careful not to bend any lines.

If you need parts information or more assistance I will need your model number.

Thanks for Choosing FixYa.

Divider between the fridge and freezer is hot to the touch, only from the outside the inside walls of both the freezer and fridge is cold, but the outside facing you as you open the door divider is very...

This is usually normal for these units it can depen on how long the unit is running in a cooling mode.
the other thing to check is the condensor fan in the bottom back side of the fridge and make sure it is running if it is not the it needs to be replaced this will also cause alot of heat on the fromt of the unit

Our freezer and reridgerator temps are climbing and the front of the middle divider between the freezer and fridg is burning hot. What's the problem?

There is a condenser fan down at the compressor area that isn't running at enough rpms to properly cool compressor. You will need to clean the condenser coils and also install new condenser fan. The compressor is over heating and shutting down on internal overload. Replace this fan and you will be good to go. As an emergency aid you can pull unit from wall about 6 to 12 inches and place a fan in the front area out of your way letting it blow air thru the front over the compressor until you can get the fan. Hope this helps and good luck.

The center strip that divides the fridge and the freezer is hot to the touch -- so hot it will burn my hand. How can I fix, and is there any fire danger?

Sir,
Sounds like there is a problem in the sealed system. Remove the rear lower cover and tell me if the condenser fan is turning. While there, is the Compressor hot to the touch?
Pull the unit away from the wall and then remove the rear bottom cover. Is the condenser fan running? If it's real dirty there, unplug the unit and clean real well. In the freezer section...look on the rear wall and tell me if you see any frost building up.
Thanks Good Luck

The divider strip between the freezer and the fridge is super hot. Both sides are still working fine, but it hasn't been this way until the last few days.

When the face of that divider gets really hot, it's because the condenser coils are unable to shed heat properly. Check to see if the condenser fan is running - it's the one that blows air across the coils under the fridge. If no air is moving, then you need to replace it. If the fan is working, then check for any obstructions and use a vacuum cleaner to clean the coils. Make sure there's enough space behind the unit for air to flow.

Door frame is always hot on freexer side

Is it hot all the way around, or just on the face of the divider between the freezer and fridge? If it's just the divider, then it's probably not a defrost problem. When that divider gets hot, it usually means there is inadequate air flow over the condenser coils outside the unit.

When the compressor is running, check for air blowing under the unit. If no air is moving, then you probably have a failed condenser fan. If the fan is running, then use your vacuum cleaner to clean the coils, and make sure there is space behind the fridge for air to flow.

Freezer running, ice maker not producing, hot in middle divder.

The dividing section should be warm, to keep unit from sweating. (by design). Cleaning under the refrigerator was what cooled it down. You cleaned the condenser. The condenser allows the refrigerent to cool down. When it was dirty, the condenser could not get enough air to cool down.
