Question about Dremel 395 Variable Speed Multipro Rotary Tool Kit

1 Answer

Tried to replace motor brush on dremel. One brush is stuck. Tried to pry but the brush tip is still in the spring. Nothing to pry on. Any ideas? Tried tapping the tool, no help. Should I try some WD40?

I had to completely dismantle my dremel because both brushes were stuck. Had to basically break them apart because they were seized solid in there.

They're just graphite, so it's not a huge deal to break them out FWIW. I'm replacing them in a nearly new 4200, of which the first one I purchased was DOA, so beware.

Why does my Dremel run for 1 sec. then switches off If I knock against te side it runs 1 sec before cutting out off

sounds if your tool has a loose or broken brush this is a small carbon object inside that makes motor run, dremel does sell replacement brushes for most of what they mfg. look where ever real dremel bits and tools are sold ck package back to see if your model number is serviced by this brush pack

Dremel 4200 stopped working

No.. the issue issue is the switch inside. when your Dremel 4200 stop working, press firmly the grey area between the speed selector and the brush housing. I think this a defect in the design of the 4200. 9f840401-fb84-4f7b-8c68-75a9be3ceb9e.jpg

How to open the Dremel 4000 black brush cap (without slot) ?

I just encountered the same challenge

I opened the 5 x T15 torx screws, pulled the tool very slowly apart and the black caps poped out together with springs and brushes (whats left of them).
My advice is not to try and pry them out as they will break. The inner "ring" is way too big to pop out without being damaged.

After the tool is opened, you can replace the brushes and carefully position all back and while holding both of the caps on the springs, close the tool and screw it back together.

Hope it helps

My dremel works intermitently. As I move the switch from one speed to another it will momentarlly run. Whats the problem? THANKS

You described intermitten pwer supply, follow this procedure:

1. check your power cord for breaks or kinks, especially where it join the piece or plug
2. if cord is ok, check/replace brushes.

To check/replace brushes on dremel 395 follow this procedure:

1. switch off unit, remove power cord.
2. with flat screwdriver remove gently brush covers, WATCH FOR LITTLE SPRINGS!!!
3. check brushes for wear, springs if connect correctly, if brushes are thinner than 3.2mm (1/8") replace with new ones, this check should be carried regardless after about 50hrs of use, brushes last about 50 to 60hrs in normal use.

In unlikely case that it is switch, this is as well very easy replaceable.

1. switch off unit
2. remove cable from power source
3. remove brushes following previous procedure
4. remove collar from front of the piece
5. remove side screws and gently pry apart halves, label side up
6. replace switch
7. screw pieces back in reverse order
8. replace back brushes.

All parts are easy available, when purchase brushes or switch, be aware that they fit only particular model!

I would recommend clean table with butcher paper on top, torx/hex screwdriver, philips screwdriver, flat screwdriver - these vary from country to country, I cannot provide what exactly tools you will need, you need to check what screws are holding your piece together, little long nose pliers can be helpful as well.

As you pull handpiece apart put your parts in order in whihc you pulled them apart, when you put them back, it will be easy to put them back in reverse order in which them come apart. For changing brushes you need about 5min (assign 15min), for changing switch or faulty power cord you need about 1h (assign 3hrs), assigned time is theoretical, prctically multiply it by 3...

If you have anymore questions, or require more detailed instructions, do not hesitate to follow this thread and leave note.

Leave note how it go, thanx!

New dremel 4000 used very little is missing the brushes and whatever else goes in the brush hole. found the cap laying on the table with no other parts. what do I need to replace???

Dremel has all their replacement parts right on the shelf at walmart, brushes, caps, chucks, the works. You found the cap, the brush is a little carbon square attached to a wire with a spring on it. Real simple. Buy a pair and get it fixed up. My favorite tool.

Dremel model 395, Type 5

Brushes are usually conducting carbon sticks at one end of the rotator (spiny bit in middle of motor) there will be two (opposite each other) connecting to the commutator (round copper looking ring with slits in it). The brushes will each have a spring that pushes them onto the commutator and a wire to carry the electricity to the brush.

As the rotator spins, the brushes connect to different coils via the commutator. This allows the electricity to energize the next set of coils to make the motor spin more.

If the motor gets very hot the brushes can stick in their housing and loose contact.
My Dremels (and type) all have the motor cooling exhausts and intakes where you need to hold them. It is quite hard to not block them during use..
I would also get hold of a multi-meter or continuity checker and check that the lead into the motor has not broken inside. Another common problem.

How to replace brushes?

On either side of the switch is a black disk with a notch small enough for a small screwdriver. Unscrew it and take it off to expose the spring. Gently pull the spring out and the brush should be attached. If you encounter resistance, then you may disconnect the spring from the brush. If this happens then push the spring back in and hope you catch the brush; if this does not work, then get creative or take the whole thing apart to get to it. After that, just put the new brushes in and recap.
