Question about Asus Eee Pc 701Sd Notebook

1 Answer

I have just purchased an EEEPC701SD with linux installed. I am new to linux but enjoy the challenge. I have been trying to connect to my dialup isp account. I have used the network connection manager and set up a profile - it works on my windows machine. When I run connect I get "No modem or modem driver not working" I have found out from searching the net that the internal modem is not factory installed and the manual seems to assume that it is. Can I get an appropriate driver for the internal modem (download with my windows machine) and transfer via usb flash drive. As yet I only have the "easy" desktop so I assume that I will install the driver from the console so if you can could you give me instruction of exactlt what to type. Regards Brian from Tasmania

    Thanks

Seems strange but I am sure you are right. If I can get a usb modem can you give me any advice regarding what I should look for in order for me to run it from linux? Also is it possible to download repositories on another system and then transfer them over via usb flash drive.

Hello

Your Asus EEPC701SD does not contain modem hardware. On the side you do have a modem port (non-functional, empty). So there is no driver or program to use this laptop as a modem, as there is none.

I checked with Asus, there are no drivers for this device, everything is already included in the pre-installed linux and the cd that comes with it.

So the port is there but there is no hardware.

I believe you can purchase a USB modem, but I can't guarantee its function with linux.

Don't you have any other options for internet access? dial up is quite costly, I remember around 10 years ago when I was using dial up.... the bill one month was huge...

If you turn your sound up on the computer, do you hear a dial tone? Does it then begin dialing? If not you may have a bad modem. Try dialing the ISP's number with your phone, it should dial in and you should hear various beeps and so on, if not the ISP is down.

Belkin Wireless router driver for Ubuntu

No drivers are required since routers are not installed but are administered. Connect the ISP modem to main uplink port. Then connect pc to any other port. Done!

HTML Browser based User Interface (http://192.168.2.1) Default is no user. No password. Hold the reset till it cycles in the back to clear any custom settings. From here use the firmware update, but make a backup before actual update.

How to do dialup connection with E627-5279

You need a modem and the software installed for that modem. Then you will need some software that will actually "use" the modem, such as a FAX software package if you're going to FAX or site specific software if you're going to connect to some remote ISP.....

DSL-2640U connect to internet but want to setup second dialup connection from pc

Sounds like you have high speed internet and also want a dialup connection as well. Maybe as a backup.
Anyway, your pc will need have a dialup modem installed in it.
If you already have one installed then you will also need a dialup ISP account. Some times an ISP will provide dialup in addition to broadband. Ask you ISP or call AOL.

Trying to connect to dialup with acer laptop notebook

Right click My Computer icon and then My Properties. Click on the Devices tab and check hhe list for Modems. See if your modem appears and if is correctly installed (an exclamation point beside iyour modem, means there is an instalation error).

If everything is OK, you still have to setup the dialup connection:enter the phone number to connect , the username and password, supplied by your ISP provider.

Getting on the internet

Plug an ethernet cable in and it should use DHCP (autoconfigure) to hook up if you have a broadband service... If you have Wifi then it depends on what Operating System you use ie Windows XP, Vista, Linux, OS X but it should scan for networks in the area and connect to which ever one you would like to use. Also if you have a dialup ISP you will need to plug the laptop modem to a phone line and dial out that way... The easiest way is to run the disc that your ISP gives you after everything is setup like in the directions.

Linux

A shell script is a plain text file that contains instructions for a Unix style shell to run. The most common shell on Linux is BASH.

e.g. a minimal example

#!/bin/bash
# script that says hullo
echo "Hullo world"

(you would normally do _much_ more than that.)

By the way most Linux distros have easy to use tools to set up modems (dialup and pppoe). Or you can usually access the modem/ADSL router directly through a web interface. (see the documentation that comes wioth your modem. (you wont need those silly disks you got with your ISP account :)

Outlook express

This wants your mail settings, not your dialup settings.

dialup should look something like

user@dialup.com
userpassword

mail settings should be

mail.dialup.com (usually pop.domainname.com)
smtpmail.dialup.com  (Usually smtp.domainname.com)
user
userpassword

Try your webmail. What ISP are you using?
