Question about IO Magic Corporation GigaBank (I250HD35) 250 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Computer is not recognizing my external hard drive

I have had this I/O Magic external hard drive for almost 3 years now and never had a problem with it. A few weeks ago the blue light on the front started blinking and a few days later when I turned my computer on, it did not recognize it. Its been blinking for over a week. Reading some message boards I thought it might be a short in the power source and that was the problem. As of today, the blue light is no longer blinking but the computer still does not recognize that something is plugged into the USB port. I plugged it into the USB port of my laptop and it didnt even acknowledge something was plugged in.

Is it the power source? Is it the USB cable? Or did my external hard drive crash?

If the light won't blink, there could be problem with the power source. Do scanning hardisk for errors manually ( take off the hardisk from the case, assemble it on other PC Desktop)

My computer wont recognize my external hard drve and the io magic light is blinking

Try connecting the external hard-drive to a different computer. If it still fails, and it is still under warranty, then exercise the warranty to get it replaced.

If the warranty has expired, open the case, and remove the disk-drive, disconnecting it from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some desktop computer, to see if the disk is recognized.
If it is, then the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed, and you could go to any computer-store to buy a new external case and adapter, and mount your disk-drive inside the new case, and work with your files.

If the disk-drive is not recognized, check the warranty on the disk-drive itself.

My computer does not recognize my WD external drive

You've tried different USB cables; so, that cannot be the problem.

You've tried connecting to different computers; so, the problem is _not_ your computer.

What's left is "inside" the case:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter,
* the disk-drive.

Open the case, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" drive to some computer.
If it is detected, then the USB-to-disk-drive adapter that has failed.
If it not detected, then the disk-drive itself has failed.

FInd the serial-number on the Western Digital disk-drive, and enter it onto Western Digital's web-site, on the "check-warranty" page. If it's older than 3 years, the warranty probably has expired, unless you were "lucky" and got a 5-year warranty.

Western Digital has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- just buy a new Passport through their web-site, and cite the serial-number, and you'll get a significant discount on _their_ price (could be higher than your local retail computer-store) for a new (probably larger) Passport.

External Hard Drive isn't recognized on new Vista Computer

here are several possibilities
Bad Cable - Well it is probably unlikely, but I would first try another USB cable just to make sure the cable is not damaged.
2. Power Supply - Try another power supply if you have or can borrow one
3. Controller Failed – The Controller inside it has failed.
4.Drive Failure – The Hard Disk inside has failed. Drives typically have an average 5 year lifespan, some last longer and some can fail much sooner. Unfortunately, you rarely have any warning, thus the need for backups.

External harddrive (MyBook) not recognize

Okay, here is what you can do to just verify that you haven't lost all the data on the hard drive (HDD failure, due to the manufacturer or a drop or heavy shake). Download a copy of Slax Linux www.slax.org 32 bit version will work, and burn the ISO they give you to a CD. I would recommend using Alcohol 120 www.alchoholsoft.com. Boot in Slax, and see if you can get the computer to recognize the HDD. If so, backup your important data onto other hard drives or thumb drives. Then when you have enough data backed up, you can format the hard drive.

Now, to get really fancy, lets say you have a somewhat corrupt formatted hard drive, and enough data free to encompass the data you have on the hard drive. Well, what you can do is download a program called "partition magic" and do a partial non-destructive re-partition. Respond if you need to get to that point so I can get you a link to the program.

Have you looked both in Device Manager and in Disk Management?
Have you tried plugging your external hard drive into another computer?
If it isn't recognized on multiple computers, then you are probably experiencing a hardware failure.
There are a variety of things that can malfunction on your external hard drive:

1) The USB cable - Have you tried switching the USB cable?
2) The external hard drive casing
3)  The hard drive itself

If your hard drive casing has malfunctioned, then retrieving your data is as simple as putting the hard drive inside another hard drive enclosure.  Hard drive enclosures are available at any local computer store, and also available on our website.  Make sure to get the right size enclosure.  The I250HD35 has a 3.5" Hard Drive inside it, which is a standard desktop hard drive.

If you put your hard drive in another enclosure and it still won't show up on any of your computers, then your best bet at retrieving your data is to contact a data recovery specialist.   After you have retrieved your data, we will replace your unit if you are still within the warranty period. For specific warranty and replacement information, go to www.iomagic.com and click on Support.

I/O Magic external drive not showing up in computer

Extreme temperatures, either very hot or very cold, can certainly cause damage to your External Hard Drive.  Based upon your description, it sounds like the hard drive enclosure has been damaged.  This would explain why device manager can not recognize it.  Your hard drive is plug-and-play with Windows XP, so no drivers are necessary.  Have you tried plugging it into another computer?
