Question about Fantom Titanium II (TFD500C16) 500 GB USB Hard Drive

1 Answer

My Fantom 500gb hard drive locks up soon after I plug it in.

My Fantom 500gb hard drive still works fine on my old PCs that use Windows XP, but it quickly freezes up after I plug it into my new laptop that runs Win 7. It's a brand new Vaio. I'm not sure what the problem is. It worked only once after a few tries and I was able to download some files. But now it wont let me do anything after a few seconds. The light just goes red. It still works fine on my other PCs. Am I missing some drivers or is there something else?

did you try a different, system to plug the drive into?
if the drive works on other systems , then your old xp has issues.
id get off XP , as MS support ends soon.
The XP OS, goes dingdong when you connnect any USB device.
if the USB is bad on PC or the External drive is dead.
so try the drive on one more PC. and now you know which end to work , all this is easy , try another PC.

Sir, your PC might have been checking for external devices which plugged in to boot from. Thats wrong. So get into the bios of your computer while startup and change the 1st boot device to your computer's hard disk. And its a bad idea, starting your computer with a usb device plugged in.

HD booting in one PC but not in another

Ubuntu works with RAM and CPU Memory instead of a pc like xp that uses Virtual RAM. If the pc that could not load ubuntu doesn't have enough ram to support the reading of the Hard drive and the Operating System then it won't work and Xp will only run on the computer that xp was installed onto the hard drive.

I have maxtor basic 500G ex works fine when I plug into old laptop with XP, but when I plug in to new laptop with Windows 7 it says I have to format drive..Why is this?

Try opening the device manager and changing device removal policy to "Better Performance" (remember to always safely remove the device afterwards or you'll likely lose data).

Also, verify that the partition type is recognized in Local Computer > Drive Management and the drive letter doesn't conflict with anything else.

Vista doesn't generally like to be installed on a hard drive that big. Well, Windows, in general doesn't.

And, from the sounds of it, you didn't install Windows on your new primary 1.5TB drive, you just copied it from the 500GB drive, which won't work.

Here's what you should to, to solve this:
1) Swap out your 1.5TB drive with the 500GB drive again.
2) Swap out your secondard 1.5TB drive, with the new one.
3) Create a partition of 120GB or less on that drive
4) Install Windows on the new partition.
5) Put the other 1.5TB drive back in, as secondary.

Once that's done, you can swap out the new 1.5TB drive with your Windows partition on it, in place of the 500GB drive.

When you boot, Windows may ask you to select which operating system you want, just select Windows Vista, and you should be good to go.

I had a similar issue a few years ago, when I tried to install Windows on a 1TB drive, and couldn't get it to work. Once I partitioned a smaller space, it worked like magic.

Drive not being recognized

Have you tried this in another PC with, say, WinXP? If it worked then it may be 1 of 2 problems:
1) Driver Issue- you may use a compatible driver and not necessarily a "Fantom" driver. WinME needs drivers for these devices unlike WinXP
2) The USB port is not giving enough power to the drive for it to run (a problem common in older PCs). I have an external USB harddisk that needs to use 2 USB ports in my old Dell laptop since 1 USB port can't supply the power it needs. The cable should have a dual-USB jack on one end, this is so you could use the power from the other USB port.

Hope this helps
