Question about Washing Machines

I have a Cabrio Whirlpool washer. I'm getting the F51 error code and can tell that there is some clothing trapped between the two barrels the washer. Is it possible to get the item of clothing out myself or will I need to call for service. Thanks!

I read in the manual that you have check and see if the basket rotates freely. Mine does not. It states, "If basket does not turn freely, determine what is causing the mechanical friction or lock up". So I think that in this case it doesn't mean RPS failure.

  • lbel76 May 06, 2010

So you seem to be very familiar with this complaint. Here is something I read on the Fixya site. it was a troubleshooting list. This is my problem. I can tell that a garment is stuck between the baskets. I already pulled out a sock and I can still not manually rotate the basket.

"Lift the lid and reach in and make sure that the basket turns freely. If not, you could have garments stuck between the two baskets or a problem with the basket hub. Any abnormal resistance to tub movement can cause this fault. "

We already replaced our control board about 18 months ago. Thanks for your patience.

If I can check that an item of clothing isn't between the baskets I will be fine. We plan on buying a new unit if it needs another control panel because we've already been down that road and it's not financially worth it.

  • lbel76 May 06, 2010

We've removed the back of the washer and can clearly see an item of clothing stuck in between the two baskets. Now we need to know how to get it out. Thanks for all of your links. Maybe I should post a new question.

  • lbel76 May 06, 2010

We just retrieved my husband's boxers out of the washer. They were stuck between the baskets and caused the F51 error. So if you cannot rotate your baskets be sure to check for something caught. Washer is working fine now.

Hi,

I have a service manual that is very good with pictures and descriptions on how to remove the basket. I could either email you the entire manual or clip the pages out and paste them here to view, your call.

So Your Cabrio's Got the F51 (AKA Cabrio Flu) -- The FAQ You've probably found this page because you've been trying to find out why your washer repeatedly quits mid-cycle and starts displaying an F-51 message. Well, I've created this blog in the hopes of sorting out the facts and getting the word out on this apparent major defective part with a $700+ consumer product.

Basically, the F51 error is a rotor position sensor error. And from everything I've gleaned from my research it is becoming a growing problem as more and more owners reach the 1st anniversary of becoming a Cabrio owner.

What has to be fixed?
Well per the service technician I spoke with and my aformentioned research, two parts really need to be replaced. 1) the rotor sensor itself ($43) and 2) the control board ($197). Apparently, Whirlpool has yet to officially recall these parts, but there is a new board that has a reduced or no sensitivity to the rotor sensor and thus the problem should be corrected.

Can I fix it myself?
That depends on your level of handy-skills. If you're one who can work on late model foreign cars with ease, then this probably won't be a challenge. But for most amateur handy-"people" this will require a professional.

Will Whirlpool pay for the repair?
If you're under warranty (either 1 year or extended), then, of course. If you're not, then maybe. Some people have reported online that Whirlpool has allowed a "policy adjustment" for this repair. In some cases this has meant a total repair free of charge. In other cases, this has meant parts or labor free, but not all free. Regardless, you'll have to call Whirlpool and try to get farther with honey. If that doesn't work, then make sure Whirlpool knows how much you know and that you really want to be able to recommend Whirlpool in the future, but this doesn't help. You will do the opposite (i.e. tell everyone to avoid Whirlpool) if this isn't resolved.

Why doesn't Whirlpool recall the part and fix everyone's Cabrio?
This is the ultimate $64k question. First, it would cost Whirlpool nearly $400 per unit to repair, this could amount to well over a million dollars in just repairs, not to mention the embarassment of a recall. The second theory is that this isn't the only problem with this washer. Recent reports of rusting and other error codes may be preventing Whirlpool from wanting to set a precdent. Finally, this is a trend with Whirlpool as can be seen with the model previous to the Cabrio, the Calypso. It began experiencing problems shortly after its release, for which Whirlpool had little to no response. The situation eventually landed in court with a class action suit and multi-million dollar settlement (see http://calypsosettlement.com/).

What should we do about it?
First, continuously encourage Whirlpool to do what's right and recall a defective part for one of their flagship products. Second, as long as Whirlpool continues to do this, make certain that every Cabrio owner knows of the problem before paying for repairs. Third, make sure every consumer considering an appliance purchase knows that Whirlpool should be avoided as long as this issue remains unresolved.

Hi,

F51 error code is a code for the rotary position sensor on the motor. It detects motor speed what is happening with these is they are getting bad connections on the motor terminals from shelac on the motor spade wire terminals most times you can fix the problem simply by removing and reinstalling the wire harness connections to the motor basically just unplug motor wires and replug them in a few times.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Whirlpool Cabrio model WTW7300X washing machine

Did you inspect the area around the drum? You have to take the top off to do that. Then there is a water sensor on the left side. The error that you get is from the drum speed sensor.

the above link is for code 51, very similar. the quite above is from the PDF manual. I just solved this problem on my machine. turned out it was clothing between the 2 baskets. Others have had bad control boards, or bad sensors

Cabrio washer

um cant really help other then to reccomned replacing the RPS sensor for a F51code. And as far as i beleive the part comes with a new sensor and attached wiring harness. a little more complicated then any other machine whirlpool has in the market so i probably would suggest you replacing the part yourself.. i wouldnt wanna chance breakin other parts while dismantling the assy.

Whirlpool Cabrio HE washing machine displays error code F51. What is it and hw to I fix it?

I work for an appliance repair company and I had a recent service call for the same exact situation on this washer. I also know that Rotary Position Sensor is linked to the F-51 error code. I have found that this is not always the case. On this paticular call the F-51 error code was caused by a piece of clothing (sock, wash cloth, etc.) being stuck or jammed between the internal basket and the outer tub. I removed the cloth and the washer ran fine, so give that a check first before you spend the money.
