Last night the frigidare AC with breaker in line

Last night my frigidare thru wall AC unit with breaker in line cord started then continuosly tripped breaker, reset , trip on and on, this was with cool on. Today I thought to start in fan only mode. Now it does not trip the breaker but does not startup either, no fan. Just lights....Could it be the cord. Its only 3 yrs old.

I was afraid of that, I opened unit and see correct voltages to capacitor. Can I troubleshoot fan motor of compressor, by somehow disconnecting on or the other and see if any starts up, basically relieve the overload?

If the breaker reset and the display lights are lit its not the cord sorry to say could be compressor or fan motors.

First If te fan wont run the compressor wont start usualy in window units there is only 1 fan for evaporator and condensor probably the fan motor. Disconnect the compressor and check could also be you need to replace the capacitor incoming voltage does not state outgoing rember the capacitor is used to give a boost on start up..

When activated, the thermostat stays on for about 45 sec. and then kicks out indicating a gfi problem . . . this seems far too sensitive . . . can I override this in some manner?? Thanks, Wayne

You can replace the wall outlet with a GFI type and cut the ac cord end off and install a basic 3 prong for 120 volt system. AC unit controls don't like ground faults and should be corrected. The cord gfi may be going out.

the breaker may need replaced, I would start there first. I am assuming that it has a dedicated line (meaning only the heat pump is off that circuit), if not then it will need to be wired that way...Good Luck Tim

If it is more than 1 AC, It is most likely an electrical problem, check the circuit breaker panel for tripped breakers, Check if the AC is plugged in to the wall, That a small button on the receptacle is not tripped this could be in any room on any receptacle, 2 small buttons, one says test and the other says reset.

Hi, did the surge /protectors/breakers on the cord reset? If they tried to reset then cut off again, you have a short in a component. Check the breaker that supplies the units wall plug to see if it may be tripped. If it is, it will be in the mid position and turn it off hard, and right back on hard. Hopefully it will hold. Do this, if the breaker is tripped, reset it and if it trips again, go to the a/c and unplug it. Now, reset it and it will hold. If you have a part, motor, compressor, or what ever is shorted to ground, when you plug it in and turn it on it should trip the cord and maybe the breaker to. Check these things I have told you and see what happens. If the unit does start up and start to cool, it overloaded for some reason. A part getting ready to go out, drawing to many amps and tripping cord or breaker. You will need to try and service some of it if it is coming on. Go outside and take your garden hose and give the outdoor coil a good washing. It builds up dirt and will cause high head pressures in the unit which in turn will cause it to overload and shut off everything. Clean it well. Inside, make sure the filter is clean behind the cover on the front and the evaporator coil is also clean. Dirt is a killer of these units and should be serviced at least once a year before it gets hot out side. So, do these things, leave the cord unplugged when washing out side, and we can go from there. If it starts to work good after you clean and service it, that was your problem, but keep me posted on this. I need to no the out come. We can take other steps if needed. Please be kind when you rate me for my help, if you feel I was of help. I will be here to help you more if needed.

Sounds like a breaker has tripped (caused by the unit) or is it might just be 'off' for some reason. I would check the outlet (where the AC plugs in at).

If the AC is a 110V unit you can check the outlet by plugging in something else, i.e. a hairdryer. If the hairdryer doesn't work either - then you know your breaker is tripped. On the other hand if the hairdryer 'works' then you know the problem is in the unit, where I'm afraid you'd be better off to have a technician to trouble-shoot it, although you could try sending additional information at this point for more help.

Remember if it is a breaker tripped - it was probably tripped by a malfunctioning Air Conditioner so if it 'trips' again in the immediate future you will need someone to check it out.

good luck!

Eaton Arc Fault Breaker type BRAF tripped. I reset it but lights will not work. Ideas please?

My arc fault breaker trips in my bedroom when ever a load is put on line. The trunk line comes into a three gang switch box and feeds the entire room. At times I can turn my ceiling fan and light on for 10 to 20 minutes before the breaker trips. Other times the breaker will trip when either switch is first turned on. I plugged a 4 watt night light in a wall receptical, without the ceiling light or fan on, it also trips the breaker. I have had other plug in lamps, 60 watt, work in other recepticals for a while. The problem seems to appear in all recepticals and lighting in the room.

Window unit trips circuit breaker

If your Plug is getting hot there is a voltage drop where the heat is generated. On these wall outlet recepticals there are two different methods of connecting the wires. First they strip the end of the wire and plug it into the back of the receptical . The second method is to strip the wire and attach it to a screw terminal . This is the best method for any outlet with a motor running from it.

For an example draw a straight line and then draw a circle that comes in contact with the line. Look and see how much contact area you have where the circle touches the line.
