Question about Heating & Cooling

2 Answers

A repairman has told us that we need to replace the evaporator coil on an a/c. They put in Freon and its taken care of the problem temporarily but he says that it will likely run out in 1 week due to holes in the coil. The cost is really high so I want to understand alternatives.

Hi,

It is a Common Problem because of Poor Workmanship or it Rotted out.Unfortunately, Other than Replacement, there is no Permanent Fix.I could only suggest you that, if possible you could try to Find the Coil ONLINE, if available or Compare the Price of the Coil with Different Shops. That's the only thing you could do. You cannot get it Repaired as it is Non Serviceable Part

I wish i could have a Better Solution.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Hello my name is Heath it will be my pleasure to assist you. The alternative which i have done myself is locate the hole in the evaporator coil and fix it by soldering it or brazing it shut. Although the coil wil likely have to be removed in order to do this then reinstalled still probably cheaper then replacing the coil as the coil is probably $300-$500 and it shouldn't take more than a few hors labor to locate dand repair the leak.

cooling coil??? you mean the evaporator to the air conditioning. if it is leaking water onto the ground there is nothing wrong with it. changing an evaporator is a big job,and you must be certified to handle the freon. This one job that should be left to an expert. Plan to spend at least 900 bucks.

How do mi check the freon

Refrigerators don't need freon added to them unless there is a leak and until you find and repair the leak you have not fixed the problem.

A lot of people think when their refrigerator is not cooling that they need to add freon. This is not normally the case 99% of the time. You are a lot more likely to have a defrost problem or a fan problem if your refrigerator is not cooling.

If you actually do need freon, call a reputable professional. There are a lot of guys out there that will just add freon because you told them it needed it, charge the heck out of you and then leave. Be careful about telling some jack leg that you need freon.

WE have a GE refrigerator-freezer that is cold in the freezer, but is warm in the regrigerator. Model CTS22I Is there anything we can check before calling a repairman?

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.
Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

The freezer isn't gettting cold enough to freeze solid and the ice maker isn't making ice because of that too. Repairman says we have a freon leak. Is that a valid response...

possible causes: bad door seals or condensate drain plugged causing evaporator coils (in freezer) to ice up, condenser or evaporator fans not on, condenser coils dirty, compressor not working, or a freon leak. if the back wall of your freezer is frosty or super cold, the coils are iced up. remove the back wall and defrost it with a hair dryer. if the water doesn't drain, unclog the drain tube. check the door seals for gaps. replace if necessary. check the fan in the freezer and the fan in the back. both should come on when the compressor is on. if not, check the fuses on the main board. replace if needed. if all that is fine, and there is no frost, you have a slow leak or a bad compressor. call in a pro or get a new fridge.

It could be a freon leak, or the compressor is not staying on.  If you can hear a clicking sound coming from the back every couple of minutes, your compressor overload is kicking off.  More than likely you either have a freon leak, or a defective compressor. Check the warranty on your machine as many manufactures warranty the sealed system for much longer than the rest of the refrigerator.
