I pull the cord to start my tiller and it does not engage the engine how do i fix

Hello sir,This usually happens at the most inopportune time. You go out mow the lawn, pull the rope and it comes out in your hand. Here's how to fix it yourself.
First, we'll talk about a simple rope replacement. In most cases you will have to remove the blower housing from the engine, remove any plastic outer cover, empty and remove fuel tank lay on the deck, tecumseh engines remove the screw on the oil filler cap, remove the four bolts holding housing on. to get to the underside of the rewind starter where the rope is. We'll assume at this point that the spring is ok and you can just wind it back up again.or you will need a new rope, you can get new rope at most home improvement centers that sell mowers, comes with handle, You can check the spring by turning on the hub in a counter-clockwise direction and see if the spring gains tension. Do not try to remove the spring from its holder or you may end up having to take the mower in for service.
1. Remove the rope from around the hub. Since there is no tension, it should come right out. If you are lucky and it broke near one end, you can probably just re-use it. If it is badly frayed or too short, you will need to find a replacement at a local hardware store.
2. Attach the handle or tie a knot in one end of the rope so it will not wind all the way into the hub. You also may want to burn the rope ends to keep them from fraying and causing a problem in the future. Set the rope aside where you can grab it once you wind up the spring.
3. Wind the hub in a counter-clockwise direction using your thumb to keep it from unwinding, until the spring is tight. Then let it come back slightly so the rope hole in the starter housing lines up with the rope hole in the hub.
4. Stick the rope through both holes while holding the hub from unwinding. This is tricky because you don't want the hub to unwind on you before you have the rope secured in it. A pair of needle nose pliers or a small screwdriver or pick may help get the rope through.
5. Tie a half hitch knot in the rope after you have it through both holes. While holding the rope, release your hold on the hub and let the rope slowly pull itself back into the starter.
6. Put the blower housing back on and your ready to start the engine & mow. hope this helps, don't forget the 4 thumbs up,any comment welcome, thank you. Hello sir, Pull rope installation, place mower on a good work surface, empty the fuel, remove the fuel tank, lay tank on mower deck, remove any plastic outer cover, now remove engine metal cover housing, there should be four bolts or screws in housing, remove old rope, get new rope from your local repair shop you will need 5 ft of # 5 rope,ok remove pull handle from old rope, burn both ends of new rope to prevent fraying, lets install new rope, place housing in your left hand holding against your body turn pulley right to left until stops, back off until holes line up,you might want to put a screwdriver through the cover grates to keep pulley from turning, tie a knot in one end of rope, put other end through holes from the inside out through pulley, pull until tight, now let rope wind up slowly until stops mark where rope stops, pull rope out about half way clamp rope or tie so rope don't go back in,cut rope at mark put handle on untie rope let rope retract.you should be good to go,hope this helps,,any comments welcome.thank you. !!

I nee to replace starter rope on tiller...

O really, u have a easy task here. Remove that pull rope coil housing and get it on the bench. Don't take any thing apart from here, that coil spring inside is a whole different religion test. Cut the knot and remove the old rope if it already hasn't broke, but get the old rope in the trash. Mark the rope hole some how in the coil housing against the hole in the housing where the rope comes in from the outside to get a line back through it all. Use braided nylon the same size as the old rope. Twist the coil back up enough to take up all of the new rope and still have some tension, line up your marks and clamp with c-clamp or vise grips to hold your coil tension. Tie your new rope to the handle and thread the other end from the outside through the holes till u see the end of the rope in the knot hole in your coil. grab with some needle nose, pull r up through and tie your knot. Make sure with a tug she's going to hold and release the clamp. Your back in business pal.

The pull string broke how. how do i put the new one on?

Go to a hardware store and ask them if they have ant bulk pull starter rope. Buy about 3 feet or so of the small stuff (it is only 30 or 40 cents a foot, cheaper that the kits) Remove the motor cover with the pull start and turn it so you can see the wheel inside. Remove the knot that held the old rope in the handle and then cut the knot on the starter wheel and pull out the tag left in there.
Now the fun part. The wheel is spring loaded and the spring has no tension on it after the rope broke. Wind it up like a clock spring until it is tight then back off until the holes where the cord goes line up. Stick a small screw driver, nail, ect in the slot to keep it from unwinding . Do not tie the handle to the cord yet. Slide the new cord through the hole in the cover and wheel and then tie a knot in the cord and pull it snug in the wheel. Hold the rope and remove the pin and let the cord slowly wind itself up. Run the cord through the hole in the handle, Adjust to the length of pull you want and tie another knot.
Reinstall the motor cover (if it binds and wont go on, pull the rope just a little bit to line up the crank with starter wheel and it will slide down.)

It sounds a bit windy but it really is a simple fix.

Need to obtain a new belt and pull rope for my Tiller

you can get a pull rope at wal-mart.measure the belt and any parts store or place that sells lawnmower belts should have one.if the rope broke close to the end knot just pull the end knot with some needle nose pliers.once you have all the old rope out lay the old rope pieces on the ground and cut the new rope to match it as far as length.turn the pulley that the pull rope goes in six turns counerclockwise.then turn the slot the knot was in to the hole the pullrope goes thru and fish it thru then pull it up and out with apaiar of needlnose have someone hold the pulley until you tie a small knot in the end of the pullrope the hold the pullrope and let it pull it in.you might have to cut some off at the handle if its still too long.to do this pull some rope out and tie a quick knot so the rope can't slip back if you let it go.

How does the gear box come apart on a six horse troy built tiller?

  1. Remove belt guard on left side
  2. Remove belt, large pulley on gearbox.
  3. Remove throttle cable, idler pulley cable and shift handle.
  4. Remove engine, handle, wheels, tines cover and tines.
  5. Lay gearbox on side on two sawhorses, left side facing up
  6. Remove all the nuts on that side. If the three shafts have corrosion, use sandpaper to remove.
  7. Pry the two halves apart, then hammer the ends of the three shafts to push through their bushings. Use brass or wood to avoid blossoming the shaft ends. When shafts are through their bushings, the right side will fall away.

Pull cored

You'll probably have to bring it to the repair shop, before that, you may try to remove the cage where the rope is coiled in normally and see if the knot is there, and then get some new rope, match the length, make a new knot, well you get my drift.

Recoil rope won't recoil!

-In bnjays case the rope was broken. Sometimes the rope retracks partially or slowly because the surface that the spring edges rub against when retracting the cord, are badly rusted. Disassemble and wire brush the rust off, or leave assembled and spray in thru holes in the pull start with WD40.Avoid getting WD40 on the rope.
