Question about Zebra LP 2844 Thermal Printer

2 Answers

Zebra LP 2844 doesn't feed label all the way out for tearing off. When I print a label everything prints fine, however the last 1/4" or so is still left in the printer. Technically, it's like the printer is not set for "tear off label". My old Zebra 2442 would extend the label out so the perforation of the 4x6 label was right at the cutter. When it printed a new label it would backfeed it just a little bit before starting the print. My LP 2844 doesn't do that. The result is that I either lose whatever is left on that label that's printed, or I hit the feed button and waste the entire next label. In Advanced Setup -> Device options, I've tried setting "Peel off" and "None" also tried checking "Reverse Sensor". Media is set as 4x6 and it's been calibrated. Media type is set to "Label with gaps". Thanks! -brian

I have also tried checking the "cut every 1 label" and when I do that, it pushes the label out an extra 1/4" or so and the orange light goes on

Thanks guys for your help. I ended up "fixing" it by downloading the NiceDrivers instead of Zebra's own drivers, go figure. The default settings in the NiceDrivers work perfectly. (I use Endicia Dazzle and Windows Vista)

Hi Brian,
When the last label printed is still under the printhead, that means the printer is in "rewind mode". There should be an option for "tear off" mode in the printer driver. This is the mode that pushes the last label printed out to the tear bar. The printer will then "backfeed" when printing the next label. Peel off mode is used if you want to print a label and have it "peeled" off the liner so that you can just pick up the label off the liner and apply it. That takes the rewind option to be installed.
Watch out though, if you are using a label software package, there might be a setting in the label format setup for "tear off" which usually overrides the settings in the printer.

Hope that helps !

The orange light is coming on because the printer is looking for the cutter option if you set the cut option in the driver.

I had this problem one time, and it was awhile back, but I remember that calibration didn't help me, either. I had to get into some part of the menu, and just barely inch-feed the label to set it, and then print it. I had to do it quite a few times to get it right. The setting "label with gaps" is right. My Zebra also had a slight backfeed, which makes me think maybe a sensor is not working correctly. I would try to clean the machine per the manual, as good as I could, then see if that helps. Then I would play around with different feed settings, to try to get the label situated so as not to trigger another feed. Sorry I don't have a more explicit explanation- it's been awhile since I had to maintain it.

I have Zebra LP 2844-Z printer and the barcodes

Here are 3 suggestions.

1
Check that your label size definition is correct, measure your label height in mm and check that your printer driver settings match.

2
Perform a calibration. How?? when printer is on labels loaded and green light, hold feed key and wait for 2 blinks then release feed key. (If you release it after 1 flash you will print a configuration label)

3
If you are using Zebra Designer, download latest version of Zdesigner V2. Install latest printer driver V2.63. This driver & Zdesigner allows you to calibrate the printer directly from within Zdesigner. Go to File/Printer settings/ advanced options and click calibrate at bottom of page. when printer calibrates then tick the box USE PRINTER SETTINGS and printer will now work properly.

Zebra LP 2844 is stalling out on every print.

Maybe the printer is not getting a good calibration on the label. If the status LED is a steady RED when trying to print, then the printer thinks its out of labels. A manual calibrationi could solve that.

1. Turn the printer off
2. press and hold down the FEED key while turning on the printer.
3. keep pressing the key until the status light flashes once, then let go
4. The printer will auto-calibrate for the size of label and then should be ready to use.

Press FEED once after its done and 1 label should feed.

Hope that helps !

Prints out 2 labels at once

I've seen this be due to dirty sensor or misconfigured media setting.  Clean the sensor in the middle of the edge on the inside and outside of the printer, then if still having trouble - Inside the printer it should tell you that if you are having printing trouble:
  1. turn off the printer
  2. Hold down the feed button
  3. turn on the printer and at the third red flash release the feed button
  4. it will then feed some pages print some info and ask you to hit feed again to exit dump
  5. hit feed again and it will say exiting dump
You have just made it reconfigure media, and it may know when to stop feeding now.

Zebra 2844 won't print anything.

Sounds like you may have taken out more than the fuse. In case there is still life the next thing to try is a printer reset

1) Turn printer off.
2) Hold down feed button whilst turning printer on.
3) Let go of the feed button as soon as it starts to flash and then wait.
4) Printer will measure out 4 labels then print out a Hex dump ending with a not to "Push Feed to Exit"
5) Push feed

Follow the above instructions, if you mess around tapping the feed button (not following the above) you can change the printer between line mode and page mode. To swap that back is another storey.

Label not advancing to tear-off perforation

Try this to have the printer auto-sense the size of the labels:
1. Make sure that printer power is off.
2. Press and hold the feed button.
3. Turn printer power on.
4. When the status light blinks, release
the feed button.
5. The printer advances the media to
measure and verify the length of
individual labels or tags. The printer
then prints a status summary and
remains in diagnostic dump mode.
6. To begin normal operation, tap the
feed button. The printer prints "out of
DUMP" and advances a label.

Zebra LP 2844 prints blanks

If the printer is printing nothing but blanks, try another roll of labels.

If the printer is printing blanks in between labels, it probably needs to be gap sensed. You can do this by:
1. turn the printer off.
2. hold the feed button down and then power the printer back on while still holding the feed button down.
3. release the feed button when the light flashes.
4. the printer will then regap itself
5. when the regapping is done, press the feed button once. It will print on the label that it is 'out of dump'
6. the printer should then be ready to go.

2. Press and hold the feed button.
3. Turn printer power on.
4. When the status light blinks, release
the feed button.
5. The printer advances the media to

6. To begin normal operation, tap the
feed button. The printer prints "out of
