Question about Western Digital Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a approx 2 year old western digital (wd10000c033:001) External Pro II drive 1tb raid. Lately the fan has been running and then the drive will just disconnect, then the blue ring flashes (even when the power is disconnected). My guess is it's overheating and shutting itself off for data safety. It's not too warm in my office but maybe someones else has some insight. As I recall I think I had to return the first one I bought so this is the second one and after two years and two moves the receipt is only where God can find it. It's currently operating at 500 gigs mirror

Often with external hard drives, as two years go by, the external powersupply of the external case tends to wear out and not provide the required voltage or constant power required by the hard drive(s) and its controller.

If possible I would give a try to another powersupply and see if it issue is solved.

The hard drives itself last longer than 2 years, the control board(s) are quite simple and should last longer than that as well, as for overheating, probably not, unless the air coming out is Hot.

Recommend me branded USB drives ?

Honestly, any USB brand will cut it for you. What you want to ensure is that you are purchasing the proper version (1.0, 2.0, or 3.0) for whatever device the key will be associated with. Also make sure you don't buy too little or too much memory. But if you know all this and you just want a reliable brand, I would go with SanDisk.

My WD 1tb external is no longer being read by my macbook pro, and verification and repair keeps failing. I can't erase it either.

Try out the hard drive on another computer, to verify if it's a hard drive issue or a computer issue. Then, get another hard drive, or USB stick, and try reading/erasing/recording on it from your MAC, to see if the computer is handling external data storage devices properly.
I'm not a MAC guy so I can't help out if it's your computer that's misbehaving... but if it's the hard drive that's misbehaving, then you may want to run a partition repair scan and also run a surface-level scan to make sure everything's ok. If you have a PC near by, get the WD Diagnostic utility here and run an extended disk test. This will find and repair any logical problems with the hard drive. After the test is over, run a SMART scan too, that will tell you the physical state of the hard drive. If it points to some parameters that are off the recomended values you may want to get all the data off the drive. I'm sorry to say, but the 500GB-1TB Western Digital hard drives, especially the Green Line series, proved to be a very silky line, fragile, unreliable.
If you opt for a new hard drive, I suggest that you keep the WD casing, and stick a Samsung or a Seagate hard drive.

Didn't come with drives so now I need setrup raid

It looks as if this unit comes with raid pre-installed and does not have any downloadable software for it. One option would be to research Windows Software Raid which would be a "free" option.

Western Digital My Book Pro - Replace Disks

Same problem. This from WD Answer ID 1664:
Important: The user serviceable enclosure will only work with replacement hard drives from Western Digital. Inserting a non-Western Digital hard drive into the enclosure could cause damage or data loss.
So Hitachi drives will not work at all. After talking to tech support, it seems you have to have them send you a replacement disk in order for it to work.
I'm looking for a way around this since I want to upgrade my dual 500 G drives with dual 1 TB drives also. Maybe they throw something onto the boot sector that tells the MyBook controller what to do, who knows? The search goes on.
