Shaft is tapered, alternator is forced onto the shaft when the alternator adapter plate is bolted to the engine.

Take the through bolt out of the end of the alternator / rotor shaft. it is a long bolt. The shaft from the engine is tapered and unlikely to just pop off. Find a bolt that will screw into the end of the rotor shaft (hardend) find a metal bar that will slide into the rotor long enough so the bolt tightens down on the bar, it will pop the alternator off the tapered shaft

Homelite generator will not stop accelerating

If the gen. worked previously and has been setting, it is possible the carb. is gummed up with varnish or there is something interfering with the governor that's built internally in the engine. Check the governor linkage for anything interfering, i.e. damaged, mud dobber nest around the shaft coming out of engine block, etc. The arm and linkage is connected to the carb. and should be somewhat free moving with slight resistance from the springs. Hope this helps some

Neighbor has a Briggs & Stratton Elite Series 5550 generator. How do you remove the generator from the engine. Need to repair oil capacity switch inside.

Hello; The Briggs engine front case is shaped to accommodate the internal mounting of the Alternator section. A service manual for this model would be very helpful. I believe you need to dismantle the back of the Alternator where the outlets are and then the outer case with the stator windings in it. This will leave the rotor ( the long shaft with windings on it ) which will be attached to the output shaft of the engine by some coupling device the you must dismantle. John

Diagram of the location of the alternator for a 1995 cad seville sts

Seville With 4.6L Engine On some models, the generator is water-cooled. When this is the case, the repair procedure is as follows:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4. Remove the radiator. NOTE: If your vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, refer to the information regarding the implications of servicing your A/C system yourself. Only an MVAC-trained, EPA-certified, automotive technician should service the A/C system or its components.
  5. Remove the A/C condenser.
  6. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  7. Disconnect the coolant inlet and outlet hoses from the generator.
  8. Detach the electrical connections from the generator. The regulator, the battery output, and the heated windshield (if equipped) will need to be unplugged.
  9. Remove the generator fasteners from the generator.
  10. Remove the generator from the vehicle. To install: Fig. 13: This shows the coolant outlet hose being removed, signified by the "1" in the diagram 91042g02.gif

  11. Attach the generator to the engine and tighten the fasteners to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12. Attach the electrical connections for the regulator, battery output, and the heated windshield.
  13. Tighten the battery output cable to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  14. Reconnect the coolant inlet and outlet hoses to the generator.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Install the A/C condenser.
  17. Install the radiator.
  18. Install the accessory drive belt.
4.5L and 4.9L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the generator harness connector and battery charging wire on the back of the generator. Heated windshield 3-phase connector and clip if equipped.
  3. Release the tension from the drive belt land remove the belt from the generator pulley. Do not remove the belt from any other component pulleys.
  4. Remove the volts, ABS ground strap, and generator from the vehicle. Fig. 14: Alternator mounting - early models with 4.5L and 4.9L engines 84203015.jpg
Fig. 15: Alternator mounting - later models with 4.5L and 4.9L engines 84203016.jpg
    To install:
  5. Install the generator and ground strap to the mounting bracket with bolts tightened to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  6. Raise the drive belt tensioner. Position the drive belt over the generator pulley and release the tensioner.
  7. Attach the generator harness connector and battery-charging wire to the generator output stud. Do not route the battery charging wire to rest against the cruise control servo. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Do not overtighten.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

Need the color coded wiring for the alternator for a XLH 1000 Sporster, 1982

First off, an '82 Sportster does not have an alternator. Sportsters didn't come out with alternators until late 1984 and then they were located behind the outer clutch drum.

Now if your bike is an 1982 model with a generator on the front of the engine, there should be three wires going to the generator. One green wire goes to the "Field" terminal and two tan wires go to the "Armature" terminal.

Don't forget to "polarize" the generator but momentarily arcing the generator's "Armature" terminal with the battery positive terminal. The regulator should be connected to the generator.

Good Luck
Steve

How to remove alternator

Park vehicle on level ground.
2. Remove battery from vehicle.
3. Remove air cleaner outlet hose, engine under cover ( right side ) and exhaust pipe # 2 .
4. Disconnect " B " terminal wire and coupler from the Alternator ( Generator ) .
5. Remove Alternator ( Generator ) belt.

6. Remove power steering pump. Do not disconnect hoses.
6. Remove Alternator ( Generator ) cover.
7. Remove Alternator ( Generator ) bracket mounting bolts.
8. Remove Alternator ( Generator ).

Power Steering pump has three bolts- 2 behind the pulley at 12 and 6 o'clock and one bolt on the back.

Once you get the power steering pump out of the way you can remove the last bolt on the alternator

Ok...I did not remove axle or disconnect hoses on power steering...I did unbolt power steering pump and moved off to side.

after that I disconnected sensor on throttle body and very carefully lifted alternator through the top where your air intake assembly would have been at, right next to A.C. refrigerant lines. It takes a minute , you HAVE TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE SENSOR!!

However it is a lot faster that taking off drive shaft and exhaust pipe!

If you go to AutoZone .com they have exploded diagrams of the parts you have to take off and they will show you bolt locations, the power steering pump bolt at 6 o'clock drove me crazy.

P.S. Get a ratcheting 12 mil wrench, it's a life and knuckle saver!!
