Lens stuck, grinding or making noise is a common description I see in many people that describe their camera problems. While it is common the actual thing that causes can be due to several things, mostly use.(which means you are enjoying your camera!)
The dust and sand that can start accumulating in there can wreak havoc. There is a little plastic ring that stays there as the camera lens moves in and out, that little plastic is often the culprit to these problems. Some people suggest cycling the camera on and off, however that can further damage this problem for that ring might be loose and cause additional problems. For the technician with the right tools this is a straight forward fix.
On several cameras this repair costs are 1/3 of the actual cost of a new camera and is well worth fixing it for it works like new afterwards!

There are some things you can do to try and "free" the lens. If it's just dirt or sand or dust jamming the tiny gears that drive the lens in and out, you can sometimes blow it out with compressed air. Sometimes you can put the camera down on a towel, and press gently (while pushing the on/off switch), and sometimes the gears will catch. Here is a good blog of different things to try on cameras with a lens error or stuck lens. If you have bumped it and broken a gear, it's expensive to get it repaired, so get an estimate first, should you decide to do that. Here is the web blog:

Good luck, hope this helps!

Hi,

Did you try taking out the batteries out for a few hours to reset the camera? Did you eliminate the possibility that the batteries can be the cause of your problem?

Lens become stuck

Do you know what caused the lens to get stuck? Did someone drop it, or was the camera a long time not used?
Most of the time this is a mechanical problem. At least is you still can switch the camera on and get into the menus and when you still can view pictures taken.
In rare occasions, the blockage can be released with a little shock to the camera. Never use force on a camera, or tick something against a camera. you could slap your hand, holding the camera, but not hard. But when the blockage is caused by a broken gear, noting will help. The camera should go to a repair store.
Before you do, be sure the battery is fully charged. An old battery, could cause trouble too. More often than you can think of.

My sony DSC H4 lens is stuck outside and it doesn go in .. the lens moves back and forth and is stuck ... the lens is also unable to focus.

Hi, Have you dropped your camera on the lens since I've seen that cause it before. If not then it's possible that the motor in the lens has gone. Either way it would be a costly repair which there's a 50/50 chance it would actually work again. Your best bet would be to get a new camera.

Lens stuck

If the battery is fully charged, and you are able to turn on the camera but only the lens wont come out, then try doing this:

1. Hold the camera from your right hand with the lens facing down.
2. Hit the base of the camera to your left palm as you press the ON button to turn on the camera. Do this a couple of times until the lens comes out.

Chances are, your camera's lens is stuck inside because of some granule of sand or dirt stuck on the sides of the lens inside. Goodluck!

Jammed digital zoom lens

For whatever reason, the lens has failed. This can be caused by many things: the lens motor has failed or is stuck, the gears involved in driving the lens have jammed, or, as pointed out previously, the lens itself, a series of tubes which fit into one another has become stuck. You can try GENTLY pressing down on the lens when you first power the camera to see if you can free up the stuck lens. If that doesn't work, I'm afraid you are going to have to get the camera serviced.
The clicking sound you're hearing is the lens trying to move itself. Unfortunately, it's probably not going to be fixed by pushing on the lens. You are going to have to get the camera serviced. Sorry!

Kodak Easy Share Z1275 stuck lens

I have a Kodak 1275. Green light would go on the off and lens was stuck open. Now for solution that worked for me. Get a can of compressed air, like what you use for computer keyboards. Blow the compressed air all around your stuck open lens, not to fast and switch directions of where you blow air around stuck opened lens. Make sure batteries are fresh and fully charged. Tap your camera against the palm of your hand twice, not to hard or you may damage instead of jarring lens lose. Next lay your camera on a table lens facing up, push power button on so camera will try to auto focus and lens should reseat itself and lens should move freely. It doesn`t have to look dirty or dusty, little tiny particles can cause the lens to get stuck and shut off fast because it is a safety feature. If this does not work try plugging your camera into computer so the lcd screen does not try to go on , thus giving even more power to get your lens moving . Do not try to force it closed by pushing or twisting with your hand or you may cause damage that will cost as much as the camera to fix.

Cannon A70 lens stuck in middle causing it to keep powering off

The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty they're worth a try:

there actually is a little gear inside that moves the lens and since you already opened it make sure the gear is there and moves. LOTS of problems with these cameras....
