My fridge/freezer is not cooling. I had a service

My fridge/freezer is not cooling. I had a service guy that simply said "replace it." It is about 5 years old, and does not get a lot of use. Might there be a better alternative than just tossing it?

The reason that the service guy to you to just toss the unit, is probably due to the fact that repair or replacement of certain system components might end up costing more than just replacing the unit. If there is a refrigerant leak for instance. The time needed to try to find the leak, might end up costing you $500, then depending if the leak could even be found, it would then need to be fixed, probably for around $100. Now you are into an older fridge for $600, and hopefully all goes well from there. On the other hand if after searching for a leak for several hours, and not being able to find it, which does happen, are you still going to want to pay the $500, and still not have a working fridge? This is the reason a guy might have "simply" said "toss it". If on the other hand, you don't think the tech even looked at the unit, then I would suggest having a reputable company take a look at it. Hope this helps

Fridge is not cooling down. Freezer is fine only the fridge. Plus the water dispenser - water is not that cold

These units like most fridge/freezers, actually cool the freezer first, then a damper opens that flows freezer air into the fridge side cooling it. The thermostat/switch controls the freezer, the refrigerator is controlled with a damper. The cold water storage tank is usually hidden in the bottom rear of the fridge, behind the vegetable bins, so if the fridge is not cold the H20 is also warm. I suggest you unplug the fridge, empty the freezer and remove the covers. Your issue could be a simple ice blockage of the air passage, or a stuck or broken damper control. Use Sears parts to look up a exploded view of your fridge. At minimum, you will learn a bit, and if you end up calling a service guy, he will know he cannot fool you and overcharge you.

Fridge/Freezer both only cool and not cold/freezing

have you checked the rear wall of the freezer?if its frosted over, remove the rear panel to check the evaporator coil,if its iced-up it cannot cool the unit properly,if so de-ice with a hair dryer, then check the defrost heater under the coil that is suppose to keep the coil ice free,if its open it cant heat to defrost,if it has continuity and is good, then check the defrost control be it timed or adaptive for proper operation

Fridge/freezer cooling inefficiently

Either the repair guy did not wire up the heater correctly or he replaced the wrong part, if the heater was good it was likley to be the defrost thermostat...I would call the repair guy back to check.

I suggest that you check your defrost heater in the freezer. If this is the problem, then if you empty out the freezer section you will see a solid sheet of ice on the back panel. If the ice is there, then you may need to replace your defrost heater, we had this same problem just a few days ago. Once the heater was replaced, the fridge started cooling about an hour or so.

MY FREEZER IS GETTING TOO COLD AND THE FRIDGE IS NOT GETTING COLD AT ALL

In most refrigerator freezers, the refrigerator gets its cold from the freezer. The evaporator fan circulates air over the coils in the freezer and cold air circulates into the refrigerator through vents. If the vents are blocked or closed, then the fridge will not get cold enough but the freezer will. If neither is cold enough, then the number of possibilities increases.
Lowering the freezer temperature will increase the cooling cycle activity. Setting the refrigerator temperature may have little affect on the cooling cycles because it simply changes the vent opening size. Decreasing the fridge temperature opens the vents more and increases air circulation from the freezer.
The temperature can be adjusted using the controls found inside the refrigerator or freezer. The ideal freezer temperature is about 0 to 5 degrees (F) and about 38 degrees (F) for the fridge.
Measure the temperature by placing a cup of water with a cooking thermometer into the refrigerator for about 2 hours or more. To test the freezer, substitute alcohol or cooking oil.

YES , you need to replace the thermostat timer, its a device that operates like every 30 min or so applying heat thru a black element to keep the freezer from not building up ice . hope this helps AJ

Fridge and Freezer losing cooling

we bought a f&p fridge freezer and in summer noticed it wasn't cooling and the freezer wasn't freezing, when the service guy came out he noticed our ducted air con was blowing onto the fridge, once we had redirected the air con outlet the fridge started working as normal, apparently f&p's work on air being convected around the cabinet of the fridge and air blowing on the fridge can effect the temperature of the convected air. hope this helps you or someone
