Question about LaCie Hard Disk 1TB Desktop with Hi-Speed USB2.0 USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Won't recognize drive

I just purchased a Lacie 1 TB hard disk external hard drive , formatted it and moved about 400 GB of data over to the drive in preparation for an upgrade to Windows 7 . After the files were transferred I double checked to make sure they were indeed on this drive and it all checked out so I deleted the files from my PC before turning off . This morning I boot up , turn on the Lacie Hard Drive and only the small(29.5 GB) Owners Manual Portion is recognized . My Data is gone . Any suggestions ?

Hello: Can you please provide more information so we can provide a more precise solution? 1) The operating system and version (for ex., Windows Vista Home Premium, or Mac OS X 10.6, etc.) 2) When you say you "formatted" the new Lacie 1 TB external drive, what type of format did you perform - as in with Windows, a Quick or Full format? And what type of file system? (ex., for Windows systems - Fat 32 or NTFS; or for Mac systems - HFS+; or something different than these?) 3) Can you provide the complete specifications of the hardware installed on your current system, and if it was purchased as a complete system, the make and model? (please provide info on any additional hardware that you have added that did not come with it from the factory) If you do not have all of the above details handy, you can provide answers to the first two questions, plus details about how you moved the files from your PC to the drive (was it a backup application, or did you simply drag and drop, copy/paste, etc), and whether or not you used a setup application that came with the external drive in order to format it / partition it / create the file system type). I don't like to "fly blind" so to speak, and begin giving you solutions to a problem without a full scope on the important details...that being said, I think you should begin by checking back over the detailed instructions that came with the drive, as well as any setup software that came with it, and ensure that it is compatible with your current version of OS, and will be compatible with Windows 7, as well. this info should be provided in a quick start guide, or users manual, as well as on the outer packaging. Also, if you haven't already, in Windows, go to the computer managment console, and check under "Storage", and "Disk Managment". It should list there what type of partition, how many partitions, type of file system, the amount of space used on the drive or partition, and amount of space currently available on the drive and /or partitions. See if there is more space being used than what the computer is currently able to access (in other words, in Windows explorer, it may show folder structure on the drive that accounts for only the pre-installed software, in the Computer Mgmt Console / Disk Managment, it may show that indeed more space on the drive is currently used than would be represented in Explorer, and if there is more than one partition available, it will list the type of partition, and the amount of space in use / free, which could account for the data that you moved to the new drive from the old one, now missing). Thanks, and looking forward to assisting you further with this issue!

How do I find a repair person for a LaCie 1 TB external drive?

it may be a bad drive and depending what is on it it would be very evpensive to fix. you can remove the drive from the case and plug it in another computer with a spare sata slot and try it. if it wont spin up it is bad. only three definits in life: death, taxes and hard drive crashes. sorry hope that it will work on anothe computer.

I have a 1TB LaCie 2Big Quadra. It has 2 500GB and runs on RAID 1. I replaced both 500 GB LaCie drives with 1.5 TB LaCie drives, but my computer only recognizes the original 500 GB. I formatted both...

I have the same problem too on my 2big form lacie . If I use 2x 1,5 tera disk in "fast mode" or in "big mode" my disk manager only shows 746 gigs available (it should be at least 2,5 terra).
If I use "safe mode" so my system can see 1,3 tera available, wich is normal for a raid mirror configuration.
I hope to find a solution quickly.

Lacie extern. hard drive is recognized, but I can't access files

Try connecting the Lacie to another computer, if it doesn't work then the hard disk may need to be formatted using Disk Manager. I suggest you format as a primary partition in FAT32.
If it doesn't work then it is possible that the hard drive in the Lacie has failed.
To test the hard drive, remove it and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If it deosn't detect it as an external drive and you connot open folders and files then it is faulty.
You can install a new hard drive in the Lacie and then format in FAT32
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Deference Lacie d2 Quadra1TB/Lacie big disk ?

It's all about the interfaces.
The Quadra has four interfaces: • eSATA • FW 400 • FW 800 • USB 2.0
The triple has all but the eSATA interface listed above.
For doing video work you want a big drive with a fast interface. If you have eSATA available then that's the fastest. If you don't then you're just as well off to go with the triple interface. The FW 800 would be the next fastest, then the USB 2.0, then the FW 400.
Because of the way that data is transferred I believe that when doing video work you would be best served by the FW 400 instead of the USB 2.0 even though the USB is faster I don't believe it is a full duplex communication so the FW 400 is actually better for video.

Having Problem with both LaCie hard drives being recognized on both macs

Try to connect to another computer, and see if it recognizes the drive. If Not, you can dismantle LaCie and take the disk out.

Connecto your disk to another external box (USB or Firewire) so you can have access to you data.

Can't access my lacie external hard drive

I would first plug it in to a different PC, this will tell you if the problem is the Lacie or Windows Vista.
if it works on a different PC then remove it from Device manager or go to the Lacie website for Vista updates.

If it does not work on a different PC then there are 3 possibilities
1. the drive got cleared data lost
2. the enclosure is bad (I would bet on this)
3. the drive is bad

purchase a USB enclosure, remove the drive and install it in the new enclosure plug in and test.

Hope this helps
