Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have just been given a 50 inch plasma, philips from a friend who has moved abroad. He had lost the remote and said that it needed fixing! I have had a friend try to set it up for me. There seems to be power but the screen is staying black with a flicker of activity. No menu is coming up and the arial is fine as it is communial. Any idea what part may be required and if so how expensive it may be?!

    HI! Thanks for your reply.

The TV is actually in another flat to where I am staying at the moment.

All I know is that it is a Philips 50 inch plasma, I can get the rest of the details tomorrow. Sorry :(

    Typical woman!

    Model is Philips - 50PF7521D/10

  • karen_aston May 06, 2010

No sound. Power light comes on at the front so it powers up ok. The screen stays dark with no picture but it you can see it kind of speckling or trying to - not sure if that makes sense!? Sorry

  • karen_aston May 06, 2010

My builder who is working on the flat tried a free view box with it but it made no difference. No DVD or video in that flat, sorry.

No menu comes up on the screen when it powers up.

    Hi karen

I took a look at some info specific to your model and there seems to be a number of things that can cause the problem you described.

    So i`m going to ask you some questions to try to narrow it down;

When you say there is a "flicker of activity"

Do you mean that there is sound or some picture or just a light flashing at the front?

Please be as specific as possible .

Do you have a dvd or vcr or any other source of signal that you could connect to the tv beside the aerial ?

There are two things that i suspect may be wrong inside your set.

One is the power supply board that feeds both the audio and video circuits of your tv.

The other might be the main board.

Those are the two boards that i see likely to cause your problem.

So the best advice i could give you at this point is to have a local repairman come over and take a look to give you an estimate for the repair.

    That`s o.k karen

Beside i will still be on hand if you need some advice about the estimate.

Just post your question in here.

Unfortunately this would be uneconomical to repair due to the price of the plasma display panel. Your best option would be to look on eBay for a faulty set with working pdp

My 50 inch is dead. Will not respond to remote or manual turn on Button. Not a thing no red light nothing.. ..

Philips televisions have been known to do this, this is because of its power source inside the tv, i would recommend replacing the part.

Red light flashes

This is a well known and very common problem with all Philips plasma tvs 42 and 50 inch. The problem is they used under rated capacitors in the power supply. If you have electronics experience or a friend that is, remove the cover and look in the back for malformed or leaking capcitors. Replace them and see if that takes care of the problem. The caps only cost $2 or $3 each, so the cost to try this is pretty reasonable although you might have an added cost of buying beer for your electronics friend. If this does not fix your problem you are down to replacing boards that can be purchased around $300 ea.
I have found my set will come on "finally" after I get the back of the set warmed up and the bad caps finally charge up. Hope this is useful.
