Clicking noise behind fridge

Hi...

Noticed your response regarding a problem similar to one that I'm encountering. You stated that one would need a new "start system for compressor".

is this something that I can replace myself or not? if so, where can i find the part and what should I expect to pay?

Clicking noise behind the refrigerator which seems to be coming from
behind a metal cover panel on the right side (facing back of the refrigerator).
Present for a couple of weeks, then freezer stopped working...now
    refrigerator is not working either.

I have a PSC23NG refrigerator. I called (800) 386-1215, pressed 3, and spoke to GE Consumer Relations.

I told her what I was experiencing with the unit and the symptoms seemed to make the main board issue. Within 10 minutes she had ordered it and set a next day service call.

Way to go GE and stand behind the product. I wish I had been notified BEFORE it failed but the call was QUICK, PROFESSIONAL, and the rep was sincerely doing everything she could to get us a repair.

Pleasently pleased.

Contact GE and notify them of the problem. Also let them know that you have located numerous other cases of the problem online of people with the same problem. They will set up a service call and will cover the cost of the parts.

Fridge not getting cold, set at coldest setting. bottom Freezer is cold though.

Hi.

The problem can be a defective defrost system. The defrost system comprises defrost thermostat, heater, defrost control and fan. The parts that fail more commonly are thermostat and heater. Both parts are located behind freezer firewall and tested reading impedance with a multimeter.

A test on the defrost system can be done by performing a complete defrost manually (remove food and leave power disconnected overnight). If the fridge restarts working after defrost, then problem was the defrost system. In that case the problem may return after few days or weeks, meaning that one part in the defrost system is faulty.Parts must be tested.

If the defrost makes no change, then there is a different problem. The damper ventilation system , the temperature control or the refrigerant gas pressure may be the problem. When the problem is one of these faults you get the compressor is running regularly, but will stay on most of the time.

If the motor is humming and clicking most of the time, but not properly starting, then the problem is usually the starter relay/capacitor. Relay and capacitors can be replaced to fix the problem.

Here a tip explaining how to deal with a similar problem on a different fridge model: Fridge not cooling. Procedure is similar on your model.

Regards.

Tip

I have a similar problem the fridge seems to work but the freezer isnt, the fan...

If you have a refrigerator or a freezer that is not working like it once did then you are looking to get it working again. The reasons why he unit may not be working properly can be many. One of the reasons may be that the refrigeration unit that is the cooling power of the unit is slowly leaking refrigerant.

If the refrigeration unit is leaking very slowly the loss of charge may be so subtle that you will not notice it till the unit basically stops cooling completely. Then all of a sudden you realize that you have a problem. If this is your problem, you will notice that the compressor is running, the circulating fan(s) will be running, and the condenser fan is running. Everything appears to be perfectly normal, but you are not getting the cooling from the unit that you need.

If you have this situation then there is often not that much that you can do. To recharge the unit you will need to find a technician that is certified to handle refrigerants. The system which is charged and sealed at the factory will have to be tapped and the proper refrigerant added to the unit. Even then you still have a system that is leaking and the fix will only be temporary. Sometimes the leak point will be obvious, other times the leak may be very difficult to find. Most of the time, the leak will be next to impossible to find and repair.

Bottom line here is that you will have to make some hard decisions about the repair of a leaking refrigerator or freezer. If you get refrigerant added to your unit it will be a temporary fix. If you can find the leak and it is repairable, you will have a bill for that repair also. That bill may be more then the unit is worth if it is a basic model or an older model. In many cases the purchase of a new unit may be the best option.

My fridge is making a clicking noise (like a car turn-signal) and the digital display in the fridge is out

The clicking is from the main control board relays clicking off and on . The part number you need is WR55X10656 . This board is located on the back , behind an 9X10 inch aluminum panel . It controls the digital display along with all other operational parts of the fridge .

F&P E442B - Knocking/cracking noise

It is probably the buildup of ice around the condensor (located behind white panel in freezer). I chekcked mine and the ice had pushed the panel oajar and the condensor unit was out of place too. All due to the excess buildup of ice. I removed the ice tonight.. will tell you if this fixes noise problem. Also our fridge was not cooling ..freezer ok.. hope this fixes this problem too- otherwise i'll test the fan (located behind panel in freezer compartment.

Freezer and fridge not cooling properly

Clean it up. Check under it and behind, clean ,vacume and or blow out all dust and check the fins on the bottom, a soft brush and portable air compressor work really well but very dusty, take out side if possible, or just vacume really well.

Clicking Fridge

I used to have a whirlpool fridge, they are the ones who make kenmore too. It used to make a loud thud noise. It was the compressor turning off. sometimes it was loud enough to wake me up at night. It did this for years and I never had any problems with it. when I purchased a larger fridge I sold it to a friend and its still working today. If you can tolerate the noise I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts giving you trouble.
