Question about Dell Dimension 4500 PC Desktop

Unable to Open Windows XP

I accidentally disabled the driver for my Microsoft intellimouse and, possibly, my keyboard for my desktop computer. I have had to reinstall Windows XP but cannot proceed past the select account stage because the mouse does not work. I have the Mouse Installation disk but I cannot download the driver because I cannot open a Windows account. I am currently using my laptop to send this message. Please can you offer any advice?

To Eagle338: thanks for trying but your solution had no effect on my Dimension desktop, the cursor is still stuck to the centre of the screen. I did try your suggestion on this computer, an Inspiron laptop, and it worked OK. I still feel that I need to download the mouse driver at boot-up but I don't know how to do it. I have the Microsoft Mouse Installation disk. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks eagle338: Do you reckon that a plug&play mouse will enable me to reinstall Windows from the Setup disk? The reason is that I have tried to reinstall Windows XP and now it stalls part way through the installation because I need to respond to a question about the driver software for my Panasonic DV camera but I need to use the mouse to make the reponse.

To Eagle338 Thanks for your help, I did try your solution but again without success Now Windows etc on C: drive has been replaced. I am now trying replace lost programs and drivers which I am finding difficult since my backups were incomplete. Yes, I have had a very sad lesson.

Your next option will be to try a plug and play mouse to get into windows and then install the drivers for your original mouse.. Plug ad play mice are available for as low as 10-15$

Nope a plug and play mouse will let you log into windows so that you can install the drivers for the mouse you were using before

chances are its a driver problem, windows vista is not very stable, even with the 2 service packs now available. if u can, go to microsofts website and try to find drivers for your model of mouse and keyobard and get the latest drivers. otherwise, disable the sleep function or format the computer with windows 7 when its released, or windows xp.
