Question about Kenmore 15218 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

Wont change settings

My machine was working fine until i switched settings. I changed to a zig zag and after i switched back to straight the machine wouldnt recognize any other setting. it will only stitch straight no matter what setting it's on. i've changed needles and the feet and tried different tensions, and stitch w/l. i've tried cleaning out the bobbin case and unplugging it. what am i not doing to be able to fix it?

Take out the needle, tighten the needle clamp screw.

Select the zigzag setting plus the largest stitch width, run the machine quite fast for a few seconds. Turn the hand wheel so the needle bar is at it's lowest, turn power off, get hold of the needle bar and move it side to side half a dozen times.

Turn on power, run the machine again as before.

Go through all stitch type settings zigzag/straight etc and run the machine in each setting.

If after all that the problem is not solved I am afraid you need a sewing machine tech to have a look at it.

It would be interesting to know the make of machine and how old it is, plus when it was last serviced.
Best of luck
Rob

SOURCE: Zig Zag Stitch not working

THis problem occurred as I was sewing on Neoprene. I was using Gutterman all-purpose thread and a size 80 needle. Tried switching to a size 70, then to size 90. Still unable to zig zag. After inserting a test sample of cotton, the zig zag worked perfectly, so I knew it was not a mecahnical problem. I switched needles again. This time to size 90 for stretch fabric. Voila! Problem solved.

SOURCE: my bobbin keeps getting tangled up when I sew

Take the thread out of the top and bottom and turn the handwheel by hand to see if the machine will rotate smoothly.
Rethread, making sure that the thread is in the bobbin tension slot and that the upper thread is in the tension and the take up lever.

Sorry for the delay in response. I just found the sight this evening.

there will be a adjustment in that you should select the stiching mode and in that give the straight mode the problem will be solved

SOURCE: ZIG-ZAG NOT WORKING

Make sure your presser foot is tight down. If the needle is going from side to side, it's doing it's job. If the stitches are coming out straight, the material is probably slipping back and forth to center area. The presser will eliminate this.

My jones sewing machine wont stitch straight just zig zag tried moving parts

Probably the zig-zag mechanism has seized from lack of oil/cleaning. Pick up fresh, good quality sewing machine oil or Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube and apply a couple drops every place where metal rubs against metal (including the zig-zag mechanism). Do NOT oil any rubber or leather parts (belts)!!!

Then apply heat from a handheld hairdryer. Repeat until it loosens.

HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE STITCHING FROM STRAIGHT TO ZIGZAG

Check that your sewing machine is even capable of zig-zag. Some machines are straight-stitch only.

Consult your owner's manual.

If your machine can do zig-zag, somewhere there is a dial or setting called "stitch width" that will determine how wide the zig-zag will be.

My Kenmore 19233 refuses to zig zag stitch past 2mm wide. At 2mm it is a reliable stitch, moving toward 7mm it is a straight stitch with one or two zig zag blips.

Do you have it on zig zag or maybe it is in one of the hem stitches. Make sure you have not selected a special stitch. Sometimes with a small width setting it looks like no zig zag, then when you increase the length you see it is not.

Sews straight when on zigzag

it's possible the zig zag gear or cam could be worn or damaged
and the machine should be checked to see for sure what's happened.

Someone gave me a singer 403. I put in the zig zag attchment but it still sews only straight. What am I not doing??

Of course, you have to push the zig zag adjusment lever from the 1 position to one of the zig zag positions, 2-5. Also, the zig zag disc must be inserted. Take of the top of the machine (two screws to loosen the attachment and lift off the top), and you can see a steel connecting piece called the pitman and it should move back and forth when zig zag is engaged. If it isn't, maybe something is gummed up as has been suggested.

I can not figure out how to set a straight stitch. I don't want a zig zag or a decorative stitch. How do i set my machine to do this?

First, make sure you select the straight stitch setting on the round dial. It is the one that has the dashed lines, looking like the stitch itself. Then, you may also want to be sure that the stitch WIDTH (dial with the picture that looks like a straight line gradually turning into a zig-zag) to the lowest setting, which is generally 0. With some machines, even after selecting a straight stitch setting, moving the stitch width can change needle position. Sometimes it will initiate the zig zag, other times it will move needle position left to right. Does that fix it?

Did you switch the metal plate to one of the ones that won't allow left/right movement by any chance?
If the wrong plate it in -The machine somehow figures out that the plate won't allow the needle to move in the left/right directions and only does a straight stitch or funky other stitches.

Be sure TOP control shows zig-zag. Flip top right bar from red to black or black to red on side of machine facing you. You can then change the widths by changing the numbers on that same circle control.
