You should be able to light a pilot with a lighter or match if the built-in igniter won't do it.
Make sure you set the ON/PILOT/OFF button to the PILOT setting, push in on the button while lighting the pilot light (flame), and keep holding the button down for about 20-30 seconds. Then the pilot flame should stay lit.
Make sure there is not a direct draft hiting heater. this wil always blow out flame.
It could be thermo-cuppling. If this is bad,it wont leave gas come in to keep piolet light lite. hope this helps. :)
the thermocouple not only keeps the pilot on but lets the gas valve know its okay to open on a call for heat, remove your thermocouple and clean it with a fine grit sandpaper and if this doesn't work replace it all together.
After you hearthe click from the ignitor your piolet will light. the flame sensor (mounted next to the piolet (tip in the flame) ) will sence the heat from the piolet sending a milivolt siginal back to the ignation board. once the board knows there is a piolet and the system is safe the main valve will open igniting the burner trays.
Change The Thermostat Cause If Your Getting Gas But The Water Heater Doesn't Detect The Heat It Will Close The Valve. When Lighting You Hold The Button Down For About 30 seconds so the thermostat will detect flame and stay lit. Check To Make Sure The Thermostat Is Where It Should Be. Heres A Picture Of What It Will Look Like.
You Can Replace Them If Need Be Will Be Available At Sears Or Home Depot. Also They May Sell Them At other Local Hard Ware Stores.
Happy Fixing And Thanks For Using Fixya.com Sincerely, Michael Scott
i have a combie bolier when i turn the hot water taps on only cold water comes out central heating working fine can any one give some advise ?and can i fix it myself.
if the flue is warm that would indicate that the flames lit for a short while. furnaces sometimes have limit switches that shut down the gas if the heat exchanger gets too hot. I would verify you have clean filters. and all registars open fully.
If the flames are not lighting verify gas valve is recieving the 24vlts. to open.
Also check ignition system it will be a piolet light or hot surface ignitor. you should be able to see both without much trouble. hs ignitor should get bright cherry red.
