We installed a new Canon black ink cartridge and we are receiving an error message that says, "The type of print head is incorrect. Install the correct print head." We know this is the correct size cartridge. Any suggestions as to how to override this error message?

Did you switch black into the color slot? Believe it or not it can tell what you "feed it" and just spitted out what it didn't like.

Sometimes this is caused by the chip on the black cartridge. I know it sounds unusual but this chip is called the "master" and it identifies the series of cartridges and head to a table built into the printer. if a error is detected it can cause the message you are receiving.

yes . put exactly the cartridge that is compatible with your printer , make sure that you are replacing with the one that has the same number on it as that of the previous cartridge

It's mean you should replace a new print head

I solved this on mine by removing and reinstalling the print head.
1. Remove and set aside the ink cartidges (don't make a mess)
2. lift the gray print head lock lever that is to the left of where the ink cartridges go.
3. Lift out the print head out without touching the ink ports inside, the contacts on the back, or the print nozzles on the bottom. The print head is the grey thing with circular ink ports that seat the ink cartridges. there are good pictures in the PDF of the Easy Setup Instructions available on the Canon Printer website. 4. Put the print head back in, lock the lever, reinstall the cartridges in the roper positions. And voila!
If this doesn't work you may actually need a new print head.

Check and make sure you did buy the right one first.

ok I figured out what to do. Open the over take out all your ink cartriages. Then flip the print head level on the left hand side up and squeeze the top of the print head (where all your ink sits on) and lift it up. You may want to blow off any dust that may be in there and put the peint head back and replace al your ink put the level down and you should be good to go if not you may have to replace the head.

Ok i know this is kinda old, but i found a solution.

First to those people to state I found a solution from hp, cannon etc etc and not give out the direct link, or instructions, then whats the point fing posting????

This error happens when you install an oem cartridge onto your system. Or havent used it in a while, so the machine is somehow misfigured.

This solution is for canon mp800, simply switch off printer. HOLD stop/reset and press and HOLD on/off button. release stop/reset. Now press stop.reset twice. then release on/off button, press stop/reset 4 times, wait 20 seconds, press on/off button twice.

switch machine back on and the printer should find the cartridges.

This method maybe the same for your mp*** if not google RESET CANON PRINTER MP*** and you'll find the correct buttons to press.
