If the unit has been sitting for a while there may be a buildup of rust on the pulley making it grab a little more than normal, this should were off after a little while.

Hi,

First, congrats on the most detailed problem description I have ever seen! Seriously, it does assist us.

All this is completely consistent with your clutch not releasing properly, meaning that the gearbox is still turning when the pedal is depressed. The syncros in the gearbox will then keep you out of gear, that is what they should do. You can indeed shift into higher gears however when driving as the gearbox revs more nearly match to what is needed. The jerking forward when you hit the starter is due to the poor old starter motor having to move the whole car instead of just the engine, because the clutch has not released !

Now as to why, it is likely that the clutch release fork has broken, inside the housing. I had this once with a Mazda, and symptoms were exactly as you describe. The gearbox has to be removed if this is the problem, and you should also then take the chance to renew the clutch, pressure and driven plate both, unless quite new.

Also a possible cause is a complete loss of clutch fluid if a hydraulic clutch, or a broken cable if that type of clutch. Loss of fluid in a hydraulic clutch can be easily checked in the fluid reservoir, and can occur if a hose splits

My clutch goes all the way to the floor I have a standard Camaro 96 3.8


clutch pedals are suposed to go all the way to the floor , you sure you dont mean brake pedal (cus thats bad ! ) clutches should travel all the way to floor and release the "grab" of the engine about 2/3 down , this way they are more smoothly allowing shifting thru the gears and not jerking as you shift thru the gears , if clutch pedal does not start to "grab" the engines power by 2/3 off the floor and fully "grab"its power all the way up(slipping) ,and you have a hydraulic clutch (96's do) then the clutch disk may require replacement or there is a oil leak in the clutch/master/slave cylinder , look for small oil leaks from under car in area of foot pedals
clutches should be replaced as an assembly that includes , disk ,pressure plate, throwout bearing , with engine side clutch plate magnafluxed for heat cracks and any hydraulic oil leaks replaced or repaired

I just recently bought a 2004 yamaha wr250f and when I put it in gear it wants to lunge forward I already tried replacing the oil and adjusting the clutch knobs and it helped a little but it still wants to...


When you say it wants to lunge forward do you mean the clutch doesn't disengage the transmission from the engine or that when you release th clutch, it tries to jump (i.e. clutch doesn't release smoothly)? If it's not disengaging the transmission, you may need to adjust the clutch at the engine using the screw and locknut. If it isn't releasing smoothly, the clutch plates could be either contaminated or the release plates weren't installed with even spacing.

The starter turns but not the motor


The one way clutch in the motor grabs a gear with a smooth cylinder sticking out of the side of it. The smooth surface of the gear is now chattered and the one way clutch will not grab it. You will have to replace the large gear and possibly the one way clutch.

Sounds like it is a clutch issue. Have the clutch plate checked or check the clutch and friction plates. I know it sounds strange but In reality we always press teh clutch all teh way in to shift. But going from 2nd to third you actually don't have to. Going from 3rd to 4th is even less of a distance. It may be a problem between the clutch and friction plates depending on when you last had them changed and adjusted.

Replaced clutch but now hard to shift into gear. will go but hard to shift. heard there was a safety on these that if brake lite not coming on will not go into gear properly.


If it's going into gear hard it's most likely because the clutch is not disengaging enough. Do you have a lot of free play? Does the clutch start to grab with the pedal real close to the floor? If so, check the the nylon bushing under the dash where the pushrod for the clutch master cylinder attaches to the arm. Is the pedal real spongy, is there air in the hydraulic system? Another posibility is that you damaged the pilot bearing causing it to drag and it keeps trying to turn the trany. If you get the rolling a little then try to put it into gear, will it go in easier? If so the clutch is dragging. There is nothing with the brake lights that will cause it to shift hard. With an automatic trany the brake lights will unlock the torque converter. Also with a 4X4 and automatic trany and electric shift on the transfer case, the transfer will not shift unless the trany is in "N" and your foot is on the brake. There is nothing on a manual set up that anything to do with brake lights and shifting.
