Is it possible to use a DVD drive from a desktop instead of purchasing a USB device just for this application?

OR Can you tell me how to make a flash drive bootable?

  • gregg555 May 06, 2010

    Geeze,

Thanks for your help to this point, I have created a bootable flash drive and copied all the files from the HP Recovery OS disk to it. I have booted the HP Mini to the flash drive and I have both an A & B Drive available. The B drive contains all the files i copied from the OS disk so I tried to run setup.exe from the B drive and I get the error (This program can not run in DOS mode).

What am I missing to get the windows setup going so I can format the drive....etc?

    Thank you

  • gregg555 May 06, 2010

Sorry to have made you explain all the stuff about how get the pc to boot to the flash drive. I used the FreeDOS example you suggested in the video earlier and had no trouble getting the PC to boot to the FreeDOS on the flashdrive.

The problem i am having now is that I can't get the Windows setup to load from the flash boot.

I can see the setup.exe file on the B drive but when I try to execute it I get this error: (This program can not be run in DOS mode) How can get the windows set up to run from the pc that has booted from the flash drive?

    thanks

  • gregg555 May 07, 2010

Thank you for your suggestions, but I trying to avoid the purchase of the external drive for this one time use. I do know anyone who has one to borrow, and the reason I am reinstalling the OS on this machine is because it is infected with a virus that will not allow internet access, so downloading from the internet is not an option.

I was really hoping that there would be a way to run the setup from the flash drive, I guess what you are saying is that there is no way to accomplish that feat?

  • gregg555 May 10, 2010

This was the ticket, worked great uintil the install was finished. Now I have a message I'm not sure how to handle. The error message "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware"

Further it goes on to say, "Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information"

    Any ideas?

  • gregg555 May 11, 2010

Many options were received and all were helpful as I worked to a solution for this issue,

    Thank you

  • gregg555 May 11, 2010

Thanks you, the issue has been resolved, I do not see the usual button to accept the solution, so perhaps this comment will suffice.

    Thank you

Hi,

1. To perform a recovery with the recovery discs, you will need an external optical drive (purchased separately). For the manual of your device click here. Maybe you can borrow from a friend.

You can use RJ-45 to USB connection adapter to connect an external DVD drive.

2. If you want to install Windows XP Pro from internet (if you have CD key) you can download the full XP Pro software CD from here which I uploaded for you.

Then you do not need external DVD drive and your DVDs. (only connection to internet.)

(Or upload your DVD to internet from another PC and download to your PC from internet :) )

Hope this helps.

Good luck

    Hi Greg,

OK, The solution is written in this link of Microsoft.

If you can not do I will try it in my computer and try to explain you in simple way to solve it. (Editing boot ini file and setting the hardware configuration)

Normally it is very easy but not to have the DVD/CD driver makes it hard. But you can do it anyway.

    Best

And also did you try this without booting from USB:

Try to log in Safe Mode (one of the selections). Press F8 during startup, Select "Last Known Good Configuration" option ( This option starts Windows by using the previous good configuration. Then install required drivers. And restart. This may work.

(The F8 key may be different in your computer such as F2 etc.)

Hi,

You can install Programs from USB Flash Drives or External HDDs, or download the Trial program from the internet, and type your FULL VERSION product key .

And you can REINSTALL WINDOWS from a USB FLASH DRIVE or eHDD if you know how to make it a BOOTABLE DRIVE and know how to put the correct files on the drive .

You can get an External USB CD-ROM Drive and use that to install programs from Discs or to reinstall the OS as long as it is recognize by the BIOS and is set as the first boot device .

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

No, it is not Possible as for every DVD Set Up, there are Different Drivers, Compatibility and some other minimum requirements.

USB being the best for the Model that you have. Many people are using the same method.

Booting from the USB flash drive

Now that you have formatted your USB flash drive and installed
the boot files onto it, the next thing that you must do is to configure
    your PC
to allow you to boot from the flash drive. This is all done through the
computer's BIOS Setup. I can't give you specific instructions for this
    part,
because every computer is different. I can give you a few pointers
    though.

You can access your computer's BIOS by pressing a specific
key immediately after you turn the PC on. The key varies, but it is
    usually
either [F1], [F2], or [Delete]. Once you are in the BIOS Setup, you
    should
verify that all of your computer's USB options are enabled. This might
    include
things like support for legacy USB devices or support for USB 2.0. If
    there is
a time out setting for USB devices, you should set it to the max to
    insure that
the system doesn't time out while waiting on the USB device to boot.

Next, find the section on boot device priority. Normally, a
USB flash drive (which is usually listed as USB-HDD, but may be listed
    as a
removable device) will have a very low boot priority. If the USB flash
    drive's
boot priority is lower than the hard disk (listed as HDD) then the only
    time
the computer would ever boot off of the USB flash drive is if the system
    were
to fail to boot from the hard disk. You must therefore rearrange the
    boot
device priority so that the flash drive has a higher priority than the
    hard
    drive.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

    Thanks
for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

I read your Comment. I guess that would be the Only Option. It's very RARE that, you would get this Error Message. This Error Message means that you need to Completely Reinstall a Window Set Up. You need to have a Bootable Disk.

Hi, I have a HP mini 1000, running windows XP, how can I reset it to factory?

If you purchased it from new, you will have the XP installation disc. Place the disc in the DVD/CD drive. boot from it and choose fresh OS from the menu. That will place a new OS of XP in your machine.
You will lose all your programmes and data. All must be reinstalled afterwards.

How to get driver for cd dvd unit

The optical disc drivers are part of the OS. The available drivers and software for Windows Vista, the original OS for the DV6748us are here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&product=3648284 . Select your version and click Next.

Windows XP and the subsequent versions of Windows all had the drivers for internal optical drives and most external drives in the Plug and Play control. You may need to go to the Device Manager and check the device status then manually update the driver. (For Vista, click Start > Control Panel (in the right hand column, then under Hardware look for the Device Manager link.) Expand the section for optical drives and look for a triangle with a red x or a yellow exclamation point. Right click on the device and click on the Update Driver button. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling the driver then shut down the computer. Check if Windows loads the driver correctly when you reboot. If you continue to have problems, the drive or cables might be bad. Consider getting a new optical drive (slim if you want to stay with an internal drive).

I hope this helps.

_nec cd-rw nr-9300a stops working after eject (pc pauses very long for shutdown) in windows 7 but it operates well in windows xp

you might need to update the drivers for windows 7.
here are some other things you might try
make sure that the cd burner is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd burner then plug them back in or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
click start control panel administrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you can you can update driver, roll back driver,or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall
hope this helps
you only need to do this if you cant see your drive in my computer/windows explorer
if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem

How to factory restore my compaq presario f700 with no CD-ROM

It depends on which OS and software came with the computer and the state of the computer. (In all cases do not use the Microsoft System Restore. This will return a computer to the last known good state (revert to a prior version of the registry) but not to the factory installed state.)

To do a recovery without starting Windows:

Some Vista and Win7 machines came with HP Recovery Manager. Press F11 during bootup (BIOS prompt) then if the hard drive is accessible, the Recovery Manager will start. Follow the on-screen directions. (If you changed the OS from originally installed version or repartitioned the drive, this is not available.)

For all other OS and recovery software options, you will need an external (USB) optical drive. The preferred option is a R/W DVD drive to create the recovery media yourself. (HP will send you recovery discs for a fee if the machine is under warranty.)

If you can enter Windows, click Start

HP PAVILION a6000n with lightscribe supermulti drive / cd writer---windows vista :: does not recognize dvd disc when inserted

If it fails to recognize and CD or DVD that's inserted you will need to reinstall the driver for your LightScribe. The factory drivers for your system can be found here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3548643

If it fails to recognize just one CD or DVD, chances are that the disc is defective.
