I do it everyday. Give me the make and model, and we can get instructions for that engine.

Lawn mover starter rope replacement

most starters can be taken off the engine and replace the rope without completely tearing the whole unit apart. by that I mean you should not have to mess with the recoil spring unless it is broken. remove old rope from pulley, wind up the pulley and hold it so it wont unwind, replace new rope onto pulley and tie a good knot and melt the ends of the rope so it wont unravel, then slowly let the pulley retract the correct amount of rope. if the recoil spring has unsprung on you, it will take a little time and probably several tries to wind it back up and position it back in the starter. they like to unspring while doing this so take some time and an extra person to hold and assist might go a long ways. good luck. check your mower for interlock switches that might interupt spark for safety reasons.

A chute switch or something like that. Check your owners manual for troubleshooting.

Unplug the keyswitch and try pull starting to rule out a bad switch.

If it still doesnt have spark you might need a new coil.

The coil is right under the recoil cover and are fairly cheap.

A set of hand tools and $30-50 for the part should do it.

Good luck and be careful.

I have a Mountfield bvs153 petrol mower. The

It fails after it has 10 minutes to warm up right?

I think you should run it till it fails and then test it for spark.

My guess is that your coil is going bad and heat just triggers the failure. After a while even cooling down wont help.

The good news. If you need to replace the coil its a pretty simple job that can be done with a few hand tools and a new coil. It shouldnt be too expensive either. 25-35 dollars for a new one if your shop around online or go to Ebay.

The only thing special you need to do once you have removed the recoil cover and removed the old coil is to take a piece of thin cardboard *(I actually recommend the box the coils usually come in. But a playing or business card will do) Put this paper between the coil and the flywheel to set the coil gap. Tighten on the screws and then pull out the paper. Put the recoil cover back on and you are done!

Good luck and be careful.

You should check for spark when this happens next time.

Usually this kind of no start problem is related to a heat damaged ignition coil.

If you check for spark and have none you will need to replace the coil.
The good news is they arent too expensive and you can replace it yourself with only simple hand tools and playing card *(yes, a card from a poker deck!).

If you end up replacing the coil you might find that an animal made a nest under your recoil housing too! This is probably what lead to the overheating and failure of the coil. I see it all the time.

Good luck and be careful!

Pull cord pulled out, never recoiled... now can't start it...

you have to replace the coil spring it's not to hard to do. take the top off and buy new coil spring and winf it in revers to get the rope pulled all the way in then put back on mower not letting go of coil spring and allowing it to catch on the crank shaft dogs.

When try to pull on the rope to start the mower is will not move. It feels like it is stuck. But I can move the blade around. Thank you

I thing the recoil spring is stuck it may be rusty. Its time for a complete maintenance on this mower. But you could try tapping the top of the recoil where the rope coils up into. Bang it a few times as you pull on the rope. this may free it up. Good luck DFD

the starter clutch probably needs cleaning. It is located right on top of the fly wheel. Pull the the pull rope housing off and you can see it
