Sounds like you may have a issue with the high and low idle not set properly and will need to set them to make them work. I would adjust the low idle tell it sounds like it wants to fire (sputters) then adjust the high idle tell it stays running

Tiller will not start, new plug, rebuilt carb, replaced upper oil seal, cleaned exhaust port.

You didn't say if there is a spark. Pull the plug out and hook the wire to it and ground the plug to engine. If there is spark then it is likely a fuel problem. Squirt a little starting fluid or gas in the sparkplug hole before putting the plug in and see if it fires. Pull the fuel line off the carb and check the flow.

Tiller will not start

Check first whether you are actually getting a spark. Remove the plug, re-attach the spark lead and place the body of the plug in contact with the engine block. If the engine has a cowling which makes this difficult, you can use a socket from a socket wrench set or something similar to bridge the gap. Alternatively get an assistant to hold the plug against the engine with a plastic clothes peg. Pull the cord and check the spark is ok. It may be easier to see it in the shade or indoors (Don't run an engine too long indoors).
Problems with 2-cycle engines are often due to fuel flow issues in the carburetor. If the engine has a primer, make sure it is sucking up fuel. Look inside the tank and check that gas runs out of the return line when the button is pressed (the line without the filter).
Clogged jets can cause problems. These can be cleaned with a carburetor cleaning aerosol.
The valve in the gas tank cap can become clogged with particles of dirt. Check this is clear.

My rear tine tiller, 18 inch - model #21AA40M1029 by yard machine has been sitting in my storage shed for two years and will not crank. I have changed the old spark plug with a new one and I have drained...

need to check for spark---- magneto [magnet-pulse to coil] may have rust causing failed spark can clean lightly with sandpaper but more than likely u need to clean the carb-buy a rebuild kit about 10 bucks -take off carb tear apart and let soak in parts cleaner use a carb cleaner and spray all the nooks and crannys in carb rebuild replace and try firing up because more than likely the carb is completely gummed up from the old gas

Will not start

If you have a spark plug wrench take out the spark plug look at it if it is all wet engine is flooded with gas,dry it and clean it if it is dry its not getting gas, try putting in a new spark plug. is there gas in tank , is switch on, is gas turned off, is the tank full, is the gas old and stinky? has the tiller sat for months carb may be plugged check ,engine oil level, try a little shot of engine starting fluid or gas sprayed into carb needle valve in carb may be pluged, float in carb may be stuck. tap on carburetor good luck

Troy Bilt Rear tine tiller model 643 Bronco, won't start,it ran out of gas, put in new gas and it started but wouldn't stay running. Put in new spark plugs, cleaned filters, changed out gas, still won't...

did it run out of gas when you added gas it could be that the fuel line has plugged up with something from the bottom of the tank take the fuel line off and try blowing threw it and take a air hose and blow out the carb and carb cleaner

The engine doesn't start. I didn't use it for several years. It started and ran well for about an hour; when I shut it off, I could not restart. I have tried the obvious...new plug, putting started

You need to give the carburetor a good cleaning, as well as the air filter. Chances are the carb. will need a new carb. kit since it has been years since you last used it. If you need tips on how to clean the carb., just let me know.

Mantis 2-stroke tiller won't start

This could be one of several problems...
• Last year's fuel. Get some fresh gas.
• Every 2-stroke needs a new spark plug each year... you know what that means.
• Clogged carb jets due to storing the tiller over the winter with fuel in the system. Never, ever do that. Now you'll need to pull the carb apart and clean it. Most of the orifices are so tiny you can't see them. Good luck.
• Engine is so old the crankshaft seals have hardened with age. This is one reason no 2-stroke lasts longer than about 8 years. If the seals are shot, then it will cost more to fix than a new one costs. Time to toss it.
