Have you tried the option of working in safe mode ? Well this could be either of these three issues.
1) A corrupt OS system file that fails in complying with the drivers installed.
2) A Virus attack that has corrupted the Driver files or pnp service that could be again a reason.
3) The usb hardware (Chipset) has an issue but this could be least possible as you said that the setup detects.

Try to run a virus scanner and find out if virus issue is bugging.
Run the Windows OS repair disk and try a repair.
Install the drivers once again.. after uninstalling the current one and restarting the machine.

Before you could do all these, try a safe mode boot to see if it works.

Good Luck.

When you boot the machine does it tell you what key to hit to get into the BIOS or System Setup? If so, press it. Maybe you need to try another keyboard if it won't allow you to press a key to get into the Bios or System Setup.

I Need to do a system recovery on a compaq presario 2700 laptop but have not disc. The reason for this is that the usb ports and pmcia slot have stopped working so I hope to re install them as a recovery...

1. Click Start 2. Click Run 3. In the "Open" box type C:\CPQS\QUICKSR\FRESTORE.EXE Performing these steps should resolve this.
Alternatively, your ports may simply be disabled in BIOS. If you go to BIOS setup on startup, and examine th esettings, there may be options to "enable" rather than "disable". You may also wish to look at the Device manager for driver issues with these components before fully restoring.

None of 2 usb ports work, drivers fine in device manager tried uninstall ane restart, drivers all install no issue ,, usb still not working

measure the voltage of the usb ports. if it is higher than 5v, than you have a problem. in this case you have to buy a usb hub and connect it through the pcm cia port.
but for your safety reinstall your os first and see if this happeneds again

The usb ports will not work, therefore the mouse nor the keyboard will work

Try the mouse in a computer where the USB ports *DO* work.

It is possible that your system does not have the correct "device-drivers" for the USB ports. Thus, those USB ports seem to be "dead".

Turn the computer off.
Connect a PS/2 keyboard and a PS/2 mouse.
Turn the computer on.
Click START
Click Control Panel
Click System
Click Hardware
Click Device Manager
Expand the "USB ports" section of the tree.
Look for "yellow" or "red" marks.
Double-click one of those "problem" devices.
Choose "Reinstall Driver".
If it asks to be able to connect to the Internet, click "yes, this time".
Hopefully, this will install the correct drivers for your USB ports.

I have a dell computer I think its a 3100 and none of the three usb ports are working. Is there a way to have this fixed?

dear,
have you install the new windows..
is it you first try..

If you have installed the windows and the usb ports are not working, you need to install the drivers of the motherboard and can be got from this site..
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_3100&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=-1&impid=-1

you need to select your operating system and the other selection and can recieved the drivers..

if it was working fine and immeditely, it stopped working due to some reason then again do this step..
hope it will surely fix the issue...
By the way, if this method doesnt work, then you have check whether the usb ports are enable from the CMOS setup by pressing DEL of F key that if shows in startup to go in it..

goodluck dear....

hi, see if you have installed any new devices/hardware to see if its conflicting, often grafics cards conflict usb devices, also just check that in the setup(when you boot up)that the usb ports have not been disabled or usb keyboard support hasn't been enabled/disabled. good luck!!
