I have had it about 2.5 years. The new connector fits really loose and if I barely move the computer it comes off. What about the popping sound. I thought something might have burned out.

The laptop model is an M-6307

  • Bernadine Cook May 05, 2010

No I replaced the adapter like the one that came with it. Everything was replaced with gateway parts.

Thank you very much, you have been very helpful.

Either the connector wasn't installed properly or there is problem with the charging circuitry itself and you may need a whole new board. What is the model of the laptop and how long have you owned it? How long have you had this problem? What happens if you charge the battery itself w/o the laptop does it work off the battery?

Along with the previous questions I have a few more if you could answer them all it would help me better to help you. Also do you mean you replaced the AC adapter or did you replace and solder in a new DC jack as well? You may want to remove the motherboard and visually inspect it. A bad solder joint could cause the popping as well. Also with the cheap aftermarket AC adapters they usually don't plug in as well so that is normal.
    Thank you,

Also if you haven't replaced the DC jack that would be the next thing to do. The part is only about 14$ but you would have to be pretty good at soldering so that the doing it wrong doesn't cause a lot more damage to the laptop.
    Thanks again,

I am assuming your referring to the AC adapter. Then it sounds like the thing you need to have checked/replaced is the DC jack which is soldered to the board. Usually a computer tech charges around 70$ not including parts for this job. If you have any other questions let me know and please take a moment to accept/rate my solution accordingly.
    Thank you,

Laptop won't power up

Smell the ac power brick. If it smells burnt replace it. If it has a light indicator that doesn't light when plugged in, replace it. If neither remove the battery from the laptop and plug just the ac power brick in. See if the laptop powers on, if yes replace the battery. If no or if it only came on briefly at the same time gently wiggle the power connector at the point it plugs into the laptop and tap the power button in 1 second intervals. If the laptop power on and off then the d/c jack on the motherboard has a bad solder joint and the computer will need to be taken apart completely to either A) try and resolder the joints, B) replace the d/c jack or C) (easiest) replace the motherboard.

If you get nothing at all you will need to replace the motherboard.

2001 ford taurus power draining new battery & new alternater won't work when cables are removed from battery

That suggests that the problem is in the harness, something in the connector or wiring is causing an open circuit. You will need to have the circuit tested to find the fault. Ford alternators have known connector issues & new aftermarket connectors are readily available at most auto parts stores.

My laptop won't charge. I have an acer aspire 5315 that won't charge, I had problems with the charging adapter before so I thought that was the problem and replaced it, the replacement worked for...

For a test -Remove the battery from the laptop. (leave it out) -Plug in the adapter and turn the laptop on. -Gently wiggle the adapter plugged in

If the computer powers off the solder and/or pins have broken loose from the DC jack. This is very common. Average repair bill is around $150, if your in the Denver Colorado Area I can do the repair for about $50
If it won't turn on while you wiggle the adapter and hit the power button then the adapter is bad again sadly

Power adapter is good, but Gatway MX6025 will not power on. It does power on briefly with battery installed. I've tested the ac adapter with a multimeter and it appears to be good. Green light on,...

Try to check with another adapter if possible.
The connector of the laptop might be damaged. so the battery is not charging and also not staring laptop on AC power. Check the ac connector of laptop.

Battery Light came on - the car shut off briefly (wheel went hard) car came back on light remained on

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

If the battery light is on, I strongly suggest that you have the battery charged. It can be an indication of a weak battery or a faulty alternator. If the battery light still on after charging then the problem will surely be on the alternator itself. If that's the case the alternator should be replaced to resolve the problem.

If the battery won't hold charge even on a new alternator then the problem will be on the battery itself. It surely is in the end of it's service life and replacement will be necessary.

You may try to reset it to by removing the positive battery connector, letting it sit for at least 5mins. then reconnect it again. This will reset the system and can get the battery light off.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Hello, I am having problems with my Compaq nx6110 laptop not charging. It is not the battery, as I replaced it at the end of December. The problem seems to be that the charge isn't reaching the battery,...

If you remove the battery, does the AC Adapter power the computer? Does the laptop have a barrel type power connector? I have replaced several power connectors for broken center pin. Does wiggling the power connector affect the charging light?

Power connector fix

I did have the same problem with my laptop and I fixed it by resoldering the connector. It is not an easy task, mine was a Compaq presario also. If you do decide to do it, you will need to take apart the whole laptop, removing every screw, LCD screen, Keyboard, processor heatsink, motherboard, the whole nine yard.
Don't forget to :
  • remove all the hexagonal screws on each side of the serial/parallel/vga etc... connectors
  • remove the LCD display as soon as you can. that part is actually easy.
  • The keyboard need to come out before you can open the case, there is a few screws under it.
Let me know how it went!
