Password protection I want to set a password so that other outside of my home can't access my router. How do I do that?

When you perform the router setup, by logging on to the router (http://192.168.1.1 user name admin password is blank [just press Enter key]) Complete the "wireless" section, choosing the SSID or name of the router on the network, security option (I use WPA-PSK [TKIP] as the password rules are easy to use. Once this pass code is set, the only way to access the router will be to know this word. If one does not know this passphrase, the router will be unusable. Every computer you want to allow access to will need the correct passphrase at connection.
This works for pretty much any wireless router, except the login parameters. Best of luck to you!

Most WLAN hardware has gotten easy enough to set up that many users simply plug it in and start using the network without giving much thought to security. Nevertheless, taking a few extra minutes to configure the security features of your linksys router wireless or access point is time well spent. Here are some of the things you can do to protect your wireless network:
1) Secure your linksys router wireless or access point administration interface linksys router wireless have an administrator password that's needed to log into the device and modify any configuration settings. As soon as you set up a new WLAN router or access point, your first step should be to change the default password to something else. WPA support is built into Windows XP (with the latest Service Pack) and virtually all modern wireless hardware and operating systems. A more recent version, WPA2, is found in newer hardware and provides even stronger encryption, but you'll probably need to download an XP patch in order to use it.
4) Remember that WEP is better than nothing If you find that some of your wireless devices only support WEP encryption (this is often the case with non-PC devices like media players, PDAs, and DVRs), avoid the temptation to skip encryption entirely because in spite of it's flaws, using WEP is still far superior to having no encryption at all. If you do use WEP, don't use an encryption key that's easy to guess like a string of the same or consecutive numbers. Also, although it can be a pain, WEP users should change encryption keys often-- preferably every week. See this page if you need help getting WEP to work.
5) Use MAC filtering for access control Unlike IP addresses, MAC addresses are unique to specific network adapters, so by turning on MAC filtering you can limit network access to only your systems (or those you know about). In order to use MAC filtering you need to find (and enter into the linksys router wireless or AP) the 12-character MAC address of every system that will connect to the network, so it can be inconvenient to set up, especially if you have a lot of wireless clients or if your clients change a lot. MAC addresses can be "spoofed" (imitated) by a knowledgable person, so while it's not a guarantee of security, it does add another hurdle for potential intruders to jump.
6) Reduce your WLAN transmitter powerYou won't find this feature on all wireless linksys router wireless and access points, but some allow you lower the power of your WLAN transmitter and thus reduce the range of the signal. Although it's usually impossible to fine-tune a signal so precisely that it won't leak outside your home or business, with some trial-and-error you can often limit how far outside your premises the signal reaches, minimizing the opportunity for outsiders to access your WLAN.
7) Disable remote administrationlinksys router wireless have the ability to be remotely administered via the Internet. Ideally, you should use this feature only if it lets you define a specific IP address or limited range of addresses that will be able to access the linksys router wireless. Otherwise, almost anyone anywhere could potentially find and access your router. As a rule, unless you absolutely need this capability, it's best to keep remote administration turned off. Password protect wireless access

Type the router IP address, "192.168.0.1", into your Internet browser.

Press "Enter" on your keyboard.


Enter your username and password to log into the D-link configuration panel.

By default, the username is "Admin" with a blank password field.


To prevent outsiders from being able to access your D-link router's configuration panel, change the username and password to something more secure.


This can be done by selecting "Tools" from the menu and selecting "Admin." Select "Administration Settings" and enter your new username and password. Save your changes by clicking "Apply."


Enter the IP addresses for the computers you want to give access to your router. You can do this by clicking the "DHCP" link underneath the "Home" tab. Click "Apply" to save the IP addresses.


Select the "Wireless" link underneath the "Home" tab. Enter a name in the "SSID" field to identify your wireless network.


Choose "WPA" for your "Security" option. WPA will provide the highest level of security for your wireless network. Create a WPA password to access your wireless network. For maximum security, enter a combination of numbers, letters, and symbols.


Store your password in a safe place in case you ever forget it. Click "Apply" to save your settings

If you plan to have a wireless network, you should set it up so that only people you choose can access it. Here are a few options for wireless network security.

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
WEP is a widely used network security method. When you enable WEP, you set up a network security key. This key encrypts the information that one computer sends to another computer across your network. The receiving computer needs the key to decode the information so that it's difficult for someone on another computer to get onto your network and access files without your permission.

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)
WPA was created to improve the security of WEP. Like WEP, WPA encrypts information, but it also checks to make sure that the network security key has not been modified. WPA also authenticates users to help ensure that only authorized people can access the network. If your networking hardware works with both WEP and WPA security, we recommend that you use WPA.

There are two types of WPA authentication: WPA and WPA2. WPA is designed to work with all wireless network adapters, but it might not work with older routers or access points. WPA2 is more secure than WPA, but it will not work with some older network adapters. WPA is designed to be used with an 802.1X authentication server, which distributes different keys to each user. This is referred to as WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal.

802.1X authentication
802.1X authentication can help enhance security for 802.11 wireless networks and wired Ethernet networks. 802.1X uses an authentication server to validate users and provide network access. On wireless networks, 802.1X can work with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) keys. This type of authentication is typically used when connecting to a workplace network.

If you have a wireless network, there are some additional security precautions that you should take.

Use a network security key
If you have a wireless network, you should set up a network security key, which turns on encryption. With encryption, people can't connect to your network without the security key. This can help avert attempts to access your network and files without your permission. Common wireless network encryption methods are Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and WPA-2.

Change the default administrator name and password on your router or access point
If you have a router or access point, you probably used a default name and password to set up the equipment. Most manufacturers use the same default name and password for all of their equipment, which someone could use to access your router or access point without you knowing it. To avoid that risk, change the default administrator user name and password for your router. Check the information that came with your device for instructions about how to change the name and password.

Change the default SSID
Routers and access points use a wireless network name called a service set identifier (SSID). Most manufacturers use the same SSID for all of their routers and access points. We recommend that you change the default SSID to keep your wireless network from overlapping with other wireless networks that might be using the default SSID. It makes it easier for you to identify which wireless network is yours, if there is more than one nearby, because the SSID is typically shown in the list of available networks. Check the information that came with your device for instructions about how to change the default SSID.

Position your router or access point carefully
Wireless signals can transmit a few hundred feet, so the signal from your network could be broadcast outside of your home. You can help limit the area that your wireless signal reaches by positioning your router or access point close to the center of your home rather than near an outside wall or window.

I would like initially to be able to remotely access my HP Home Server attached to my Belkin N1. In the future I might want to host a website and remotely access that site. ???


You need EITHER a static legal IP address, purchased and rented from your ISP OR use a dynamic DNS service to register your system once connected to the internet.
Look up dynamic dns on google.
You also need to be able to set up the belkin to allow requests from outside to be passed to your computer, but remember the hackers! password protect it, restrict the ports in use.

I've a Netgear router and I've reset it. Now I can't get it protected - it's working but without protection. What too do ??


Access your router with following link.
http://192.168.1.1
or
http://192.168.0.1
type user name as "admin" and password as "admin" or blank or "password"

Then configure your router as WEP.
Then go to wi fi security then set WEP key it is your password to connect your wi fi.
So only those can connect who knows your password.

How do i set a password to protect my wireless internet


Access the Router's page and go to Wireless configuration. You may assigned a WEP key that uses hexadecimal value (A-F, 0-9). So if someone attempts to access your Wireless network, they will prompt to enter a Wep key.

How do i password protect my router from outsiders connecting

Select your model (v3,v4,v5 etc) then look at the setup pages. Set your security to WPA rather then WEP as this is easily crackable, and with WPA you can choose the password. You should also change the routers admin password to be extra safe.
