Question about Smith AO Pool Pump Motor

1 Answer

Hi I am replacing pool pump motor (O A Smith ¾ hp) and hooking it to 230 ground fault. I set lug to 230on motor. I have line 1 ? line 2 and green screw on frame of motor it also has another lug that didn?t have a screw on it?? On the under side of that lug it has a purple wire going to the inside of the motor. Question is what is that lug for and do I use it?? From fuse panel in house I have a 4 wires going to motor white black red and bare ground. My breaker in panel is ground fault. Thanks for any help someone could give me. Thanks Max Brenneman

In this case you are going to be better off consulting a electrician to help you with this issue. There are to many risk involved in getting someone to assist you over the internet with this. If someone tells you the wrong wire placement and you get hurt or pop the fuse in your house you are now looking at that much more work,

Wiring a 230/115 1 hp 56y pool pump motor

please verify the name plate to be 115 230 volt motor.there will be a schematic that shows you exactly how to hook up this motor depending on the voltage being supplied to it. The main thing is switching between 115 and 230 volts this is a selector switch this very easily forgotten about. Please make sure to check that and double check that to make sure its on the proper selected switch. Good luck

Hello
No there is no switch in the motor.Correct voltage is done by hooking up incoming power to a combination of internal wires or contacts.

There should be a wiring diagram on the cover where the hookup is.Or on the outside case of the motor.
The high and low speed doesnt make sence to me.Check the rpm of the motor it should be one rpm continueous.
Unless this is a Hvac motor and not a pool pump motor.Possible you may have been sold the wrong motor.
Usually a pool pump is 115 volts 1 speed and 1 rpm continuos duty.Unless you specify 230 volts.

Where do you hook in the neutral wire (common) on 230 volt install

You do not...you only use three of the 4 wires if you have a neutral pulled out to the box. Both line wires go to the motor along with the ground, cap off the neutral.

Is it going to run on 230V then? If so you would normally use red and black. The white wire should be a neutral and the ground wire is obviously ground.

Do you have a meter you can use to confirm the voltage between the wires? If you do you'll want to start with red and white since you seem to think black was not being used before. If the voltage reads 230 and the motor is set up for 230 then attach one wire to L1 and the other to L2...it will not matter which is connected where as long as one is on each terminal. Insulate the black and ground the ground lead to the motor ground screw.

If the voltage is not 230 between those two check between red and black. If that is the 230 then insulate white and put red and black to L1 and L2.

I WOULD THINK THAT THE WHITE WIRE IS GROUND AND THE OTHER TWO ARE LINES (HOT) HOW TO CHECK THIS ? THERE IS A 99% CHANCE YOUR 2 HP MOTOR IS A 230 VOLT MOTOR.. SO TAKE A VOLT METER SET IT FOR SAY 50 VOLTS AC, AND ATTACH THE LEADS TO THE 2 BLACK WIRES, SHOULD SAY AROUND 220-240 VOLTS.. THESE GET HOOKED TO A-B.. WARNING IF THIS IS A TWO SPEED MOTOR, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HOOK IT UP, IF YOU HOOK IT UP WRONG IT WILL SMOKE THE MOTOR ! OK YOU SAY HOW DO I TELL IF ITS A TWO SPEED ? LOOK AT THE LABEL IT WILL HAVE 2 RPM'S LISTED. IN THIS CASE CALL YOUR LOCAL POOL PUMP MOTOR REPAIR GUY.. HEY U , PRIME THAT PUMP AFTER ANY PUMP REPAIR !! NEVER EVER RUN A PUMP DRY... I just bought a AOSmith 1hp pool pump. I do not

Well first did you have an old one you're replacing? Check it. Second you could test your voltage with a tester (best idea then you know for sure). Third, you can look at the circuit breaker in your panel, and if it is a single breaker , it is 125V If it's a double pole breaker (two wide with wide handle) then it's 230V. Usually if it is 230V then the wires coming to it would both be black, or black and red, with a bare or green ground. Usually if it's 115V you'll have one black (hot), one white (neutral) and one bare or green(ground) but at times someone will wire one 230 with black and white. There should also be a large bonding copper jumper connected to a lug on the outside of the motor to bond your system to the pool (NOT AN EQUIPMENT GROUND)

Pool pump 3/4 hp wiring

I think the lug with no screw is for 110 volt? Don't know, but your 2 wires in, black and red are both hot, each one to the lugs, line 1 and 2, the bare wire gets bolted on outside of the motor and jumped to another ground somewhere, and the white wire, goes to a lug marked B?,,, check that one. I went to the web site and they want you to know if you do it wrong, no guarantee, so check out the frame number, then look up your motor and go by the label.
