The delivery of msgs is down to the networks. You'll find that between networks the msgs are slow at delivery and to or from the same network they're almost instant.
I can't think why your phone vibrates for no reason.
I'd keep a close watch on that phone, it's trying to stir trouble.

How do i get sound to work for recieving text messages

Depends on the phone, but on iPhone there is a very small lever on the top left edge above the volume UP button.

You should also check Settings - Sounds - Text Messages

Stopped alerting me when I receive a text message. no sound alert or vibrate alert, nothing. the only way to tell if I have a message is if I turn on the main screan

You do not give the maker or model of your cell phone.
Navigate to messages and toggle to settings
Open up and see if you have message alert there.

How do I adjust the volume, too LOUD?

Hello jinniq51,

i have some tips on how to do it hope it helps :D

Settings
In this menu, you can adjust various phone
settings. To reset some menu settings to their
default values, select Restore factory set.
Tone settings
Select Menu > Settings > Tone settings and from the available
options:
Ringing tone-To set the tone for incoming calls
Ringing volume-To set the volume level for the ringing and
message alert tones. If you set Ringing volume to be level 2 or
above, your phone rings with the ringing volume ascending
from level 1 to the level you have set when there is an
incoming call.
Vibrating alert-To set the phone to vibrate when you receive a
call or a text message
Message alert tone-To set the tone to sound when you receive
a text message
Warning tones-To set the phone to sound tones, for example,
when the battery is running out of power

I bought the lg optimus v yesterday for virgin mobile from radio shack and it doesn't vibrate when I get text messages. it vibrate for other things but not text messages. I'm fairly certain I have all the...

Gah! I had this same issue. Click on the Messaging icon. Then click the button farthest to the left and it will bring up the settings menu. That is where you will be able to choose your vibration option. It took me a couple of days to figure it out, but I finally did. The text message setting aren't available in the regular settings area. You have to actually click on messaging and then adjust the settings there.

Turn of message sent tone even though phone is on vibrate, looked through manuel.

The Message Sent notification is tied to your MMS alert. Remove the sound/vibration for MMS and it'll remove for Message Sent as well.

to the vibrate issue do you have email set up?
and in regards to the texting, when you get more than one text it should give you an option that says go to messages and it will take to the message list.

Text message alerts

In PhoneStart-->Settings and Sounds&Notifications, you can set each notification sound/light/vibration setting for several different things on the phone.

If you want to disable the message after sending an SMS message, go to : http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/ppc6700hacks.shtml

and install that on your phone for MANY more options. Your SMS message notification disable is the first option on the program!
