Question about Sony KP-61V85 61" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Bad picture quality

Hi,
I have a KP-61V85, the picture is not the same as when I bought it (get a wavy pattern, color is off)
Rather than going out and buying a new Big Screen I thought I would try to fix this one, I believe it is the lamps or lenses, How much does it cost to replace the lamps/lenses on these TV`s?

You do not need to change the CRT's or lenses. The failure on this TV is the convergence ICs that became defective.
If you know how to solder, this should be an easy fix for you.
The IC markings are STK392-150 with locations IC1502, IC1506, mounted on a big heatsink(s).
If you want to change the complete assembly, you can check this link and ask them if they have the assembly where the STK392-150 ICs are mounted.
Good Luck.

Leakage in tuner

tuner may be bad, it is possible if rear inputs work to route signal to one of those inputs by using a box with the same type of connections the rear inputs have--bypass the tuner in the set with a box.

How to change the brightes

A fairly old model is listed here(KP-61v85) this answer is based on that model number:

If the set has not been serviced for a long time with set unplugged remove rear cover and locate (hard to miss) the three large black lens at top of chassis--clean the lens with a lens cloth or a paper towel with glass cleaner sprayed on the towel.

If the lens are dusty/dirty they will diminish the brightness and clarity of the the picture---they are the light source for the picture in this set.

Picture is very red and slightly distorted

A very red picture is usually related to the Red CRT or red CRT drive board being defective. The convergence will only mess the alignment up and cause the picture to appear 3D it wont make the Picture take on alot of red tint.

There are wavy colored lines an the screen all the

A problem like yours is NORMALLY NOT the TV set's fault....it's the Cable.

I'll bet you see thin lines moving across the entire picture...they are slanted like this >> \ \ \ \
That's generally caused by a bad ground on the antenna cable OR it can be the cable box's MODULATOR.

Try using your VIDEO OUTPUT off of your Cable box and see if the wavy lines are still present. If they are the Cable box needs swapped with a good unit.

You can also verify this problem by checking your TV with a DVD player...no lines indicate the TV is fine.

If you have problems with the DVD player's picture, then you must have dried out filtering capacitors on the Video board IN the TV set...

And THAT is not an easy fix if you do see lines with your DVD player.

Wavy green lines when picture is black

Check out this site. These TV's are known for the CRT's going bad. This site shows how to make adjustments that could help extend the life of your set. Take a look at the first picture, if the lines look like the ones in the picture this site "should" help. The picture shows a problem with the red but don't worry about the color, look at the lines. I hope this helps.

Herringbone pattern

Herringbone (and other patterns) can be caused my many faults, the obvious one the tech was looking for was a tuner/interference fault.

Another common cause is a faulty power supply.

Difficult to say without having the TV on the bench.

I'm a bit suspect about the $400 - $500 repair cost though.

Perhaps try another tech?

I doubt it's a DIY repair though.

Let's know how you get on.
